Mission: Mission 94: Shattered Shields and Crack'd Swords
Location: Starfleet Command
Timeline: July 11th, 2392

K'toa Riverkit walked into Starfleet headquarters, unsure of why she was being summoned to Starfleet command. She wasn't even a member of Starfleet, she was the first admiral of the Caitian defense force. Walking into the meeting room she saw both April Yamaguchi and Pasha Andreyev in the room.

Fleet Admiral Pasha Andreyev nodded as he regarded Fleet Admiral April Yamaguchi, a smile on his lips. "yes, that's doable. I can have a few of my guys get in touch with your guys and see where that idea goes." he commented before he turned to notice Riverkit. "Lo." he addressed the female Caitian he didn't recognize. "Here for the meeting in a few minutes?" he inquired.

Yamaguchi smiled. "Seems like quite a guest list."

K'toa nodded. "Yeah, though I'm not sure what for."

Chief Inspector general Didit Hawas of the Federation Space Patrol walked in next, and then he settled his large, bulky frame into one of the chairs. Behind him was the Federation Special Investigations Bureau commander, Director General Falcon Pelt, an Eeiaouan female. Both of them looked just as puzzled as K'toa.

Myzar Zinov came in next, and noticing the unusual company he commented," OK, whats going on here."

Yamaguchi smiled. "I have no idea myself but I suspect we're all about to find out soon enough." the pregnant female responded with a cheery smile.

Soon after, the other senior commanders of Starfleet, the Marine corps and Fighter corps shuffled into the room. Kurso Teska when he took his seat noticed a man he hadn't seen in some time. "Admiral Holland, It's been a while."

Holland turned his attention to his old protege, "Yes it has, I have been approved to return to regular active service."

Kurso nodded. "Well, that's good to hear."

April grinned. "Admiral Holland, sir. It's good to see you again," she commented, momentarily forgetting he hated being called sir, by anyone.

Greetings were then cut off by the arrival of Zeyss and two aides whom were carrying large stacks of PADD's.

Fleet Admiral T'Sara McKnight regarded the proceedings with a degree of amusement as she settled back to watch the show, she had no idea as to why she was here but she did not really care all that much.

"Alright," Zeyss started. "The Federation council has made its decisions regarding the SDF act. They have approved the creation of the SDF."

April Yamaguchi smiled. "Well that will be a great help to us, it'll allow us to sort some of our problems out," she commented. "Where are we getting the manpower for it, however?"

"The SDF is mainly going to be formed by merging the various member world space fleets with the star patrol and the SIB," Zeyss explained. He then focused his attention on K'toa. "K'toa, your one of the most experienced admirals of any of the defense forces, so the Caitian government has approved you being the new head of the Space Defense Force with the rank of Grand Admiral."

K'toa didn't quite expect this move. "Well, I guess that explains why I am here."

"So does that mean the SID and the star patrol are going to be dissolved, " Falcon pelt asked.

Zeyss shook his head. "No, you are going to continue to maintain your own force structure, you will just be under the department of the SDF, with access to all their resources. The SDF isn't just going to be a space militia. your organizations will be the main law enforcement sections of the SDF."

Falcon pelt nodded without asking further questions.

Yamaguchi smiled, this move was as she felt, long overdue and it was nice that this issue was getting sorted out at last.

General Tom Walther likewise smiled, this would take some pressure off of his units as some of them had been requested to serve in a defensive role across several Federation worlds due to lack of resources and personnel.

Admiral Alegos Chan, the head of Starfleet R&D, made a suggestion, "One thing I think would be good to develop for the SDF, is the concept of the defense monitor and the battle monitor. These would be smaller and mid sized warships that are very heavily armed and protected, but with only a limited operating range and speed. However, with their mobility, they would be more useful for overall Federation defense rather than the static fortifications and starbases that we have historically relied on."

"That sounds a lot like a Defiant class starship," K'toa remarked.

Alegos nodded. "Yes, same basic concept, but I think the defiant space frame is no longer large enough for the role, We need bigger and more capable ships. Plus the defiant placed too much emphasis on high impulse speed, something a defense monitor doesn't really need."

April Yamaguchi spoke up. "I've never been a great fan of the original Defiant design. It's too small to do what it was designed to do." she paused. "The Asgard class was a larger version of the Defiant with a pod but it was designated a failure after her shakedown trials," she explained. "So what did you have in mind for this?"
