Mission:
Mission 82: It Is War’s Prize to Take All Vantage.
Location: Goronar System
Timeline: Apr 21st 2392
For almost 28 hours, the Klingons showed no signs of attack, despite the beefed up patrols, and this puzzled both Kumirae and K'Miras. They knew the Klingons had reinforcements, so why didn't they attack. Kumirae contacted Carl Patterson, saying. "Well, our patrols still haven't spotted any signs that the Klingons are preparing to attack yet."
Patterson nodded as he responded to the Division Admiral who was contacting him from the ship she was on. "So far. yes, I know," he responded. "But we know they are out there and they'll make their move whenever they wish and not before."
K'Miras replied. "It's still very strange though, they have a large fleet, and they still hold back. It's weird."
Patterson smiled. "Well, that's Klag for you... The man isn't daft and nor is he stupid." he paused. "This is too subtle."
Meanwhile seated in the command chair on the bridge of his flagship. General Klag smiled softly, while he admitted a large dagger in his left hand which was of Gorn origin. "Are all forces in position for their efforts?" he inquired of the officers around him.
"Yessir... They await only your word."
"Mmm... They make such exquisite weapons... don't they?" Klag commented with a smile. "Tell assault forces two, three and six to begin," he commented with a smile.
The first warning the combined Federation/Akurian Fleet got the impending Klingon attack was when several Klingon ships found themselves being shot up by Akurian mines, that had been placed in the area surrounding the planet. Nevanzi never had time to lay a large field, but it was big enough to let the allied force know, they were coming. Kumirae looked at Patterson. "Well, here they come."
Patterson meanwhile had ordered his collective fleet to go to battle alert, ships began to quickly prepare for battle. Carriers began disgorging massive numbers of starfighters. "Lovely... Well, let's get to it then."
Klag meanwhile watched. "Have assault force five begin launching their cruise missiles.." he then grinned. "have group seven wait two minutes then have them open up as well."
Nevanzi was quick to notice that the missiles were being fired willy nilly at any target within range, including ships that they had little ability to harm, such as battleships. Taking advantage of the error, Nevanzi had his battleships ignore any cruise missiles targeted at them and had them instead shoot at missiles that were targeting the lighter vessels. And true enough, when the missiles that got through found their targets, the battleships just shrugged off the hits, and the more lightly protected vessels had to deal with far less incoming fire of their own. A few Destroyers and a light cruiser where unavoidably damaged by the missiles, but thanks to the Klingons novice error, there were few real casualties.
Patterson watched the battle unfold as ships on both sides began to break and burn as a Klingon battleship begin to slowly spin and drift out of control as several explosions began to tear the massive ship to pieces as ships from both sides began to close on the other side.
Patterson meanwhile began deploying massive numbers of small starfighters into the battle on bombing assignments, detailed to assist the Federation capital ships in dealing with the Klingons when he noticed something unusual about the second Klingon force approaching. "Transports..." Patterson sighed. "I should have guessed."
K'Miras wondered why transports were being sent so early, so he mentioned. "We need to get a good scan of those transports, something seems suspicious about them."
Patterson narrowed his eyes. he too has his own suspicions too. "Somethings...not.. right," he responded by sending several of his destroyer groups in to deal with the transports when suddenly one of them shattered in a truly impressive explosion.
Two destroyers were caught in the second massive explosion, both of them emerged moments later trailing fire but no major damage. "All fleet units.." came the voice of the Captain of the first destroyer. "They aren't transports.. they're flying warheads." there was a pause as the crackle of subspace field distortions came over the system. "All fleet units. Back off from those transports... take them down from long range if you can."
Patterson sighed. "Lovely... Klag isn't being very subtle."
The nearest Akurian ship opened fire on one of the transports using its graviton beams, and instantly one of the graviton beams breached the containment vessels on one of the warheads inside the transport, causing the entire transport to detonate.
Klag growled softly as he watched the event go down as the Federation destroyer force along with their new allies engages from a distance. "Call the rest of the transports back," he growled.
Meanwhile on the USS Leviathan. Patterson watched as the remaining Klingon transports turned and fled before one more exploded due to weapons fire. "Nice work guys. let's mop up the rest of them."
Nevanzi ordered his fleet to hold their position rather than chasing the Klingons, and likewise, the Federation force did the same. K'Miras knew the Klingons weren't done, so he had more recon patrols sent up to scout the enemy.
In the Klingon fleet, BumpKass said to Klag. "Tekevek's forces are ready for the attack, they wish to enter battle first."
Klag grinned. "Of course, they may have this honor. I will not deny them." he regarded BumpKass with a soft chuckle.
K'Miras suspecting that this wasn't over, announced over the comm, "be on your guard, I highly doubt the Klingons are done."
A few minutes went by when suddenly a large force of smaller Klingon ships appeared from behind their cloaks. Once in the open they started shooting from maximum range, the fire wasn't very accurate but it was more or less effective at shooting more or less in the direction of the Federation forces and their allies.
Lasky smiled. "Those aren't the newest Klingon ships." as he regarded the sensor display on the console before him. "If I didn't know better.. I'd say they were a house militia rather than Klingon Defense Forces."
Over the com system. Admiral Patterson's voice barked. "Open Fire!."
"They are probably there just to be a distract-" Teval's voice got cut off when suddenly, multiple Klingon ships warp jumped right among the Carrier group. Federation and Akurian ships hesitated only momentarily, then the battle turned into a brutal melee.
Lasky sighed. "Fuck. I shoulda seen that coming," he commented as the ordinance flew from VLS cells and phaser arrays, from torpedo launchers and disruptor emitters.
Aboard the USS Leviathan, seated in his command chair. Rear Admiral Carl Patterson narrowed his eyes. "Not a very convincing distraction but effective nonetheless," he commented in a rather dry tone. "Destroyer groups two and three, commence deploying ordinance on those Klingon ships in group Charle Fourteen."
A female Caitian voice answered. "Aye Admiral. Comet and her people are on it."
Captain Siranna was seated in her command chair, had one been giving her a medical check, they would have been somewhat surprised to notice that her heart rate did not escalate neither did her breathing, indicating her total lack of any surprise whatsoever. "Shall we teach these impudent fools some manners?" she inquired. "Tell all ships to target the same enemy target and unload all our weapons on it, target all nearby battleships like this one at a time." the Caitian female ordered.
"Aye Captain." as the Comet shook from a minor glancing blow from something as the Comet and her fellow destroyer units added to the firestorm outside.
Meanwhile on the Klingon command ship. The present leader of House Te'Kevek smiled with glee as his forces got to mix it up with the hated Federation and the new enemies which were large and they made worthy opponents. "Sir.. we've breached the Gorn's planetary shields"
"Good. Land our troops and we will show these defense force fools how real Klingons fight." the seated Klingon smacked his armored chest. "Qua'pla!"
On the Leviathan. Admiral Patterson sighed. "Holy crap. Idiotic morons," he commented as he gave orders to deal with the Klingon assault. However, the Klingon fleet screened their assault a little too well as their orbital assault force was savaged but their landing force got through the shielding over the Gorn homeworld and were able to deliver a significant number of troops to the planet surface.
Once their position was secure, the Klingon fleet began to disengage, but less than twenty percent of their fleet escaped the battle over Goanar to fight another day.
Patterson sighed softly. "Well.. that was tragically brief." he turned his head. "Let's find out how badly we've been hurt with this fight.."
"Aye Admiral." one of the nearby officers went to work at his panel. Meanwhile, on the various Federation ships, the various crews began to clean up, dust themselves off and start repairing damage and tending to the wounded however the true effect wouldn't be known for hours yet.
Meanwhile on the ground. General Alan Masters and his forces met a surprised and somewhat ill-equipped force of Klingon shock troops, his Marines put up a ferocious defense however over the course of several hours, the Klingon force fell apart and was broken.
It was six hours after the initial assault when Masters came back into the command post. "Contact the Fleet. Tell them we won. The Klingon assault on Goranar has been broken."
"Aye General." the Sergent responded as he sent the word to the orbiting forces.
Kumirare received the report then passed it on to Carl Paterson," Well our Marines have broken the Klingons main attack."
"Really?" Patterson sounded surprised. "Mmm, fine work guys.." it was clear that this entire conversation had caught him almost completely by surprise. "What did we lose for this victory?"
Kumirae looked over the report," Well we took some casualties but not extensive. It seems the Klingons only really had a vanguard force of shock troops. Our arrival in this system nine days ago cut off the Klingon vanguard troops from their main army forces. Their vanguard forces simply didn't have the supplies to sustain the fight since we cut off their logistics and they're follow up forces."
