Mission:
Mission 33: Losing the Peace
Location: Various Locations - USS Tranquility
Timeline: 1300Hrs - May 9th, 2391
Lt Commander Siaxx Dvald sighed softly as she entered the sickbay of the USS Tranquility, she found the place to be somewhat soothing for her. "By Khasst, I hate Roanoke.... the place is a stinking shitpile." she muttered to herself.
"What can I do for ya Lass?" Ennis asked with a humored grin.
"Mmm... Sorry... I'm Siaxx Dvald... Chief Medical Officer for... the stinking Shitpile that passes for the command ship of this battlegroup." she explained bluntly. "Is the skipper present?"
"Oh yeah," Ennis nodded. "She is probably in the tha prosthetics lab, working on implant parts."
"Implants... maybe she can make a few for me to order... new brains for half these walking fucktards I laughingly call a crew.." as the door opened and in walked Rachael Yamaguchi, wearing her cadets uniform. "Hey guys...."
Siaxx regarded Rachael with a confused look on her face. "What are you doing here?"
Rachael gave the smaller Bolian a rather enigmatic grin. "I'm here to get to know the various doctors....I feel its important to get to know them as they will soon know me, rather intimately.. inside and out, after I get shot down."
Siaxx blinked. "Wait... what?"
"Heh..." Ennis smiled stiffly as he walked Siaxx down to the labs. "We're sorta dating, Ma'am."
"Sorta dating." Siaxx echoed. "How does one sort of date...?" she inquired slowly. "You either do... or you don't.." she paused. "in any case, I've taken up enough time as it is... I need to see the skipper."
Rachael watched the smaller Bolian woman turn and walked off as she regarded Ennis. "Hows things?" she inquired.
"Good, actually. Sarah is very happy to have Saki as a friend and Danny appears to be doing well in daycare," Ennis smiled as any relaxed dad would. "Maybe you'll get to see Danny today, if he's feeling better and if you stick around long enough."
Rachael smiled as she regarded him. "That sounds good. All I'm doing is mostly coursework and Phoenix... gave me the day off.. So.... I'm free."
"So I can help you study until it's time to pick up the kids then," Ennis smiled as he offered her his elbow.
Rachael grinned up at him as she gently slid her hand inside the crook of his elbow. "Will you get in trouble... if you were away from your post?" she inquired.
"Not unless we go into full medical alert," Ennis promised.
Rachael smiled. "You up for lunch?" she inquired.
"It's a date," Ennis promised with a bow of his head.
Meanwhile Siaxx reached her destination, before she tapped the door chime.
"It's open," Olmos called out as she began to put away her tools.
Siaxx tapped the door release. "Captain.. I know you're time is precious.. so I'll be brief... I want a transfer out of medical into another field, preferably command."
"When your betrothed came here a few days ago, asking about any command opportunities, I guessed it was for you," Olmos admitted with a smile. "Unfortunately, I can't grant you what you want until you have control of your department."
"Wait... you talked with Phoenix?" Siaxx inquired. "As for sickbay on Roanoke... I've started working on things.."
"Colonel Sullivan was worried about you because of the fact you do far more work than you should," Olmos spoke rather envious. "In order to jump ahead of other command hopefuls though, you have to perform extraordinary in your current role. And rating par as a department head with a department that is also par the course doesn't really move you up any faster."
Olmos stood up and walked over to the replicator. "Any particular tea you like, Dear?"
"Something heavy and soothing." Siaxx responded quietly. "I hate that ship.."
"Performance wise, you do a good job," Olmos admitted. "I could possibly suggest dropping medicine and focus only on the day-to-day aspects of the job. Administration, really. That, or switch specialty."
"Maybe a change of speciality will do me some good afterall." Siaxx paused. "What else could I do?"
"Your jacket says you're a generalist in both surgery and clinic," Olmos spoke a few moments after she pulled up Siaxx's file. "I'm an ophthalmologist, specialized in eye prosthesis. Nalla is a neurosurgeon and cardiologist... Then you have pediatrics, pathologist, virologist, oncologist. The list goes on. Question is, what is it you like?"
Olmos then took Siaxx by the hand and said softly, "Close your eyes and forget about all the crazy things going on in your sickbay... What is the one thing in medicine you've come across that has made you feel the most needed and fulfilled?"
Siaxx did as she was asked as she paused. "I honestly can't remember.." a sigh escaped her lips. "At times I feel so,... useless.."
"I suggest letting Nalla handle the medical side of your job for a while then. You do the admin portion and just watch and take part in cases that interest you. And once you figure out why those cases interest you, you'll know where you want to specialize in."
"Sounds good. Nalla has been already serving as Chief Medical Officer while I handle the paperwork." Siaxx explained. "Nalla has been a great help to me."
"How do you feel about that?" Olmos asked in genuine concern, for taking a backseat to someone like Nalla was never easy for folks.
"I've been stuck out in the jungle for eight years..." Siaxx responded evenly as she shrugged her shoulders. "I'm out of practice, so I'm relearning as I go." she turned her head. "Whats going on?"
"You mean on my ship?" Olmos asked for clarification.
"Its a medical alert... a sick child is coming in..." Siaxx turned back to Olmos. "Mind if I assist?" the small Bolian inquired.
"Probably little Danny Cullen," Olmos agreed as she walked Siaxx out of the office. "We don't get many medical alerts during green conditions."
Siaxx went over to where the small child had just arrived. "Easy." she said softly as she watched two medtechs back away from the sick child. "Let me handle this....someone grab me a medkit please.."
"He's eighteen months," Olmos supplied as she caressed the baby boy's back. He was hot, with a high fever, and crying. "Daycare brought him over here just moments ago."
Siaxx received a standard medkit from one of the nearby medics, she produced the tricorder as she began a standard scan. "Alright... He has the twenty four hour stomach flu." Siaxx explained as she selected an ampule of medication as she gently administered to the small child. "It'll be okay sweetie." she smiled as she tried to soothe the small child who was presently starting to calm down.
Siaxx gently held the child in her arms as she smiled. "Its gonna be okay little one.." she turned to Olmos. "Should we call his Dad?"
"I'm here," Ennis spoke as he moved over to the biobed fairly quickly. Still in surgical scrubs too. "It'll be ok, Danny." The babe calmed even more when he saw his dad.
"Remember to measure the weight of the child," Olmos told Siaxx. "Weight and age determine the dosage in human infants."
Siaxx paused as she had forgotten to do that. "Ahh.." as she gently handed the small child off to his father. "Here you go.." as she produced her tricorder. "Mmm... four pounds under his normal weight.." she regarded Cullen. "How long has he had this issue?"
"I thought it might be colic," Ennis spoke, a little silly too for Danny was too old to get that. "Three days now."
Siaxx raised an eyebrow. "Mmm..." she smiled as she regarded the small child in his father's arms. "Where is your date anyway?"
"I'm right here." Rachael Yamaguchi commented. "How is he?" Rachael asked Ennis.
"Some sort of stomach bug," Ennis noted. Worried, but visually trying to be brave for his son. "Docs here are trying to figure it out."
"Could always be a case of food poisoning." Rachael explained.
"I thought Elizabeth was the only Yamaguchi in training to be a doctor."
"I sometimes moonlight as her shadow, she sometimes asks me for help with her homework.... which she has a lot of by the way.."
"Yes... Something she requested in coping with what happened to us all, last mission." Siaxx responded.
Rachael raised an eyebrow. "Yes, I sometimes operate as her study fellow." as she regarded the child in his fathers arms. "He's underweight.... has he been throwing up or going to the bathroom a lot?" the youngest woman in the room asked.
Siaxx paused which for Rachael was telling. "Let me check with daycare."
Rachael slowly smiled. "Please do..." she turned to Ennis. "May I?" she inquired, clearly wanting to take Daniel off of his hands.
"Sure," Ennis agreed hesitantly, like any worried father. "I suppose he's been throwing up anytime he eats something semi-solid."
Rachael gently plucked Daniel from out of his father's arms, the child instantly quieted when he found himself looking at Rachael, a woman he didn't know, for her part Rachael adjusted her stance to accommodate the child's weight as any experienced mother would. "Its gonna be okay little guy.." she gently soothed him. "Once they find out what's wrong."
"Danny been sleeping ok?" Olmos asked Ennis.
"Not through the night, past few nights. A couple of accidents," Ennis explained.
Siaxx had plucked a PADD from where it was sitting as she was busy doing some research. "Mmmm..." she scowled. "It could be a couple of things..." she allowed. "May I?" she asked Rachael.
Rachael smiled with a bemused expression as she handed the toddler off to the smaller Bolian woman, Siaxx gently accepted Daniel as she smiled. "Well... don't worry sweetie, we're gonna make this issue go away... and we'll make it all better."
Daniel smiled. "Yay!"
"You're good with kids... Siaxx... you know that right?"
"I am....?" Siaxx paused. "I never thought.."
