Rachael Yamaguchi was sitting alone in a set of guest quarters which she had received from the Operations quartermaster, she had moved Saki into her own room.
Saki stretched out on the sofa as a smile graced the small child's face as the doorbell beeped at the two women.
The child hopped off of the sofa and went to answer the door, she found herself looking at the other woman. "Hello"
"Hi Saki, is Racheal home?" Meslina asked the young girl in front of her.
"Mom, you got a visitor."
Rachael got up and came over. "Hey!"
"Hi hon," Meslina said as she gave Racheal a hug, "sorry to stop by without letting you know first. I just was thinking about you and wanted to catch up. I hope I'm not interrupting anything."
Rachael regarded the smaller woman who used to be about her height. "Only my plotting to conquer the universe.." she responded. "come on in... I'm going to introduce Saki here to Hazelnut icecream."
"What?" the eight year old responded. "Whats hazelnut?"
"You're about to find out...." Rachael went over to the replicator as she ordered three bowls of ice cream. "Now eat small spoon fulls... or it'll cause brain freeze.."
Saki was mystified. "Whats that?"
Meslina going along with it made a joke to Saki, "it's when your brain turns to ice for a sort period of time, it hurts but then momma will make it better by giving you a kiss." She took the bowl that was offered to her and let the aroma fill her nostrils before she took her spoon and got a full scoop.
"So what happened?" Meslina asked Rachael looking her up and down.
Rachael paused. "Its''' hard for me to put into perspective.. Most of it was hunting for food, potable drinking water however was easy... we had it in spades.." she paused a second time. "Most of it was me training to use my psionic abilities to kill..."
"I mean yeah I knew I was short but now you are a starship length a head of me in the height department. I have to ask though how's the air up there?" Meslina asked teasingly.
"Thinner then it is down there." Rachael responded in the same tone.
Meslina just smiled at her friend, "well I'm just glad to see that you are back in one piece and that you have a lovely daughter to boot. Though as much as I hate to say it I don't feel like I should be a part of the family. I mean I really don't fit in, I've never had any brother's or sister's nor do I have any children of my own." She added the last couple of sentences with a slight tinge of regret.
"I'm sure Torilla will be upset that I'm saying this that's why I didn't want to say anything to her about it yet."
"But you should tell mom at some point." Rachael responded. "Nobody really fits in... we just do the best we can with what we have.... I'm not sure of where I belong in life... but I'll tell ya what I do know.... I know my mom and family love me and Saki... and they care about us... Mom considers you kin..."
Saki regarded the other woman who'm she didn't know. "Why don't you think you fit in?" she inquired. "If the family thinks of you as kin... what does it matter?"
Meslina thought about that for a moment, "well sweetie I've not been a very good at expressing myself to the family and I've been alone for so long that it feels strange for me to be a part of something again." Looking back to Racheal she gave her a glance that was kind of pained, "I know I should tell Torilla but sometimes it's hard for me to talk to her about those things especially since she's been busy with other things and this is really not the best time to bug her with my own personal faults."
"Because you feel like you'd be whining to Mom about something you consider silly?" Rachael responded. "Meslina.... go see her and stop worrying about things you can't control." the younger woman added. "Besides... Mom has the twins to worry about... I know she could use a second pair of hands for awhile."
Meslina sighed a little, "yeah I suppose you're right and I haven't seen the twins that much either so it would be nice to see them too. First though I would like to just hang out with you and Saki some more and just have a good time." Meslina smiled at Saki who was trying to eat the ice cream with out too much success. "Here honey let me help you," she took a small scoop of her own Ice cream and held it out to Saki so she could take a bite.
Saki smiled as she figured out what Meslina was showing her as she took the bite of the ice cold desert. "Mmmm."
Rachael smiled. "You should give yourself a little more credit.."
Meslina looked at her friend with slight confusion, "hmm? What do you mean?"
Rachael watched her friend interact with Saki who seemed to delight with trying ice cream. "You are good with children.... you have a peaceful nature..."
Meslina thought for a moment then laughed, "I'm sorry hun but I don't think that I have that much of a peaceful nature, and as for the children thing being good with them is just a motherly thing that every female has I think. Whether or not they have one of their own."
Saki regarded the older woman as she licked her spoon in silence. "Why does one have to bother with being peaceful?" the eight year old asked.
Rachael raised an eyebrow. "Why would you say that...?" the larger woman inquired. "You're confusing me.... " she paused. "You don't think you fit in because you're too warlike?. Or is it because of something else?".
Saki raised an eyebrow. "I wonder why people fight.. is it just because they can...?" as she lifted another spoonful of ice cream to her lips as she took a bite of it. "Perhaps... there is a better question..."
Meslina just sighed and looked down at the young girl, "to be honest I think we fight because we must in order to survive." Looking back up to Rachael she answered to the best of her ability, "I'm not sure what I think but I know I don't fit in to the family I don't feel it like I should. It's really hard for me to explain but I just don't know."
Saki added. "To ask why we fight... is to ask why the leaves fall..." the small child licked her spoon. "Its in our nature... families fight... we all do..."
Rachael smiled. "Meslina, I don't know where I fit in anymore... from my perspective... I spent eight tears off in the wilderness. I had her.." she indicated Saki. "From mom's perspective... I'm still fourteen and pregnant... she's still adjusting to me being twenty two... with her.. and with two year old twins no less.."
Meslina just put her head in between her hands and just slumped forward. "I know and I feel bad for you, you are still a very dear friend to me and always will be that will not change... it's just I don't know how to feel or think any longer."
Saki regarded the older woman. "Then don't force it.... it'll come when it comes... and then you'll know what to do.... I think." she paused as she ate another mouthful of ice cream.
Rachael merely raised an eyebrow. "There are a lot of Yamaguchi's aboard ship right now. Gabriel and Savannah are here, Elizabeth and Kameron too. Me and her, Mom, the twins and I hear Dad is coming aboard in the next day or so... but Mom doesn't know that... its a surprise." she smiled. "Don't worry so much about what the family thinks or does.... just go hang out with mom and talk to her... "
