The Child and the Kitty - Part One

Mission: Mission 31: The Ashes of Eden
Location: Various Locations - USS Roanoke
Timeline: 1800Hrs - April 6th, 2391

Lt Commander Siaxx Dvald was busy trying to get to know Shonax again as the cat mewled at her. "Come 'ere Beastie." before she plucked the cat up as she gently cuddled him.

Dora meanwhile was curled up on Phoenix's lap, sitting on their couch as their guest for this evening was watching the cat and the dog carefully. "So... what do these two animals do exactly?"

"They're pets. They give comfort and joy ta folks, if ya take care of 'em right," Phoenix answered instantly.

Saki paused. "Oh...." the child responded. "I assumed they were for dinner."

"Saki..." Phoenix sighed and stood up. Then walked over to the young child.

Saki found herself leaving the ground as Phoenix picked her up, she smiled. "Hi?" she paused. "So... no eating the cat then?" the small child inquired, while keeping a straight face, also she found herself hanging in midair.

"Correct," Phoenix answered with an unamused frown.

Siaxx watched the entire scene play out as she tried not to laugh. "She has my sense of humor. No doubt about it.." the small Bolian commented with a grin.

"She would," Phoenix agreed as she sat on the couch with Saki in her lap.

Dora curled up beside of them and rubbed the top of her head under Saki's hand.

"Dora wants you to pet her ears," Phoenix informed the child with a huge grin.

Saki looked down at the dog as the Dog lifted her head and whined softly at Saki who gently ran her fingers over the dog's ears. "Okay. I think you made your point..." the child commented to the dog.

Siaxx meanwhile petted the kitty who meowed loudly at her.

"Beastie and Dora are great friends," Phoenix commented. "But they can sometimes get a bit too rough with each other. So you have to watch out for that."

Shonax meanwhile leapt out of Siaxx's arms and landed next to Dora as he hissed loudly

Saki sighed as she snatched the cat out of midair. "Come ere Beastie.."

The Cat yelped in fright as he ran over Saki's arms and shoulders and then over Dora who reacted badly and then over Phoenix's left shoulder as he cowered from Saki behind Phoenix.

Siaxx watched all of this with deep amusement. "Wow... Shonax was going to go play with the dog but he will have second thoughts about going near you."

Shonax peered down at Dora from behind Phoenix's left shoulder as he began purring, while he brushed her ear with his whiskers before he mewled softly.

"It's all right Beastie," Phoenix chuckled a little as she rubbed his ears. "Pets are not toys, Saki. You can' just pick 'em up. You have to let them decide that. But you can lure them to play with you using their own toys."

"Oh.." Saki commented before she turned to regard the Cat who as busy staring at her. "I don't think he likes me."

"He doesn't know you." Siaxx commented. "Same as he no longer knows who I am..." she explained briefly what goes into it. "Its a little give and take... let him come to you... Shonax isn't very subtle... He is quite demanding.."

"Pets are also like people... You have to spend time with 'em before they get ta know you an' you know 'em," Phoenix explained as she gently caressed Dora's head. "He's also a male cat. So he thinks this is his place. So you can' just pick 'em up. You gotta earn his respect for him ta accept ya in his pride."

Saki gently petted Dora's head the same way that Phoenix was doing. "So... thats how it is..." she paused. "What function do these two serve?" Saki inquired. "other then being playthings...I mean."

Phoenix regarded Saki. "Lots of things, they provide stress releif and comfort to the average person and we look after them with giving thyem a space to live, they look after us with emotional and mental well being."

Saki turned her head as she regarded the cat who had slipped off from where he was and was now approaching from her left. "Relax Beastie..." she watched him as he took a swat at Dora's tail with his claws. Saki knew she could reach over and grab him but rather then do that, she decided on something else. As she reached over to gently stroke him, he took a swat at her before she gently grasped him and pulled the kitty to her. "Easy ..... why is your name Shonax and Bestie..." she mispronounced the word.

Shonax mewled softly as he regarded the being he didn't know. Saki meanwhile gently set the cat in her lap as she gently rubbed his ears, he slowly closed her eyes as he moved his head to one side, clearly enjoying the attention. "Is this right?" Saki asked. "Am I being too rough with you kitty?" she asked the cat directly as the child ran her hands over his fur.

"Better. But cats are independent. So they normally come ta ya when they want attention," Phoenix explained.

Saki gently held the kitty in her arms as he mewled softly at her. "Oh.." and with that he landed on the dog who growled at him, Shonax hissed back as the small child watched carefully. "Behave, you two." she said quietly.

Shonax ignored the human as he squirmed free then he leapt onto the dog who reacted in the expected manner, the two began fighting on the sofa as Saki backed off. "Is... this normal?"

"No. It aint," Phoenix answered with a sigh of frustration.

Siaxx watched quietly before and with lightning quick reflexes, she reached in, then she grabbed the kitty and hauled him away before the Dog could bite him or Siaxx herself. "Shonax... enough... seriously, quit fucking with me...." Siaxx growled.

Dora for her part had stopped and was starting to settle down now but she still looked pissed.

"He's startin' ta recognize ya again," Phoenix noted in a hopeful tone to her intended.

Siaxx gently held the cat in her arms. "I think he's feeling frisky."

"Probably wants ta go fuck another cat," Phoenix shrugged with a smile. "You can deal with his next girldfriend's owners if that happens."

"I know Rachael wants to kill him and Torilla isn't much better off.." Siaxx let out a soft sigh. "Half the furry clan also wants to kill him too... " she held up the cat so they were almost nose to nose. "You need to get snipped my little man..... yes you do."

Shonax complained at her.

"I think that would make Tane happy. She don' like the cat colony he's created," Phoenix laughed, for she found that little annoyance to Tane hysterical.

Shonax meowed a second time as Siaxx gently held him in her arms. "I don't think there is a female cat on this ship he's not seen yet." Siaxx commented.

Saki raised an eyebrow. "Do I even want to know?"

"No." Siaxx answered.

Saki meanwhile turned her attention to the dog. "Where did you get these two anyway?" she inquired of Phoenix.

"We rescued them... Siaxx gave 'em their vaccines an' we just adopted them when my fighter pals brought 'em ta Sickbay," Phoenix spoke with a proud grin. "That's why I love Siaxx. Very carin' gal."

Siaxx smiled. "They were strays... trapped inside some Federation fighters... we let them out.. and we kept them along with a few others.."

"We don' want any others though," Phoenix pointed with with a smile. "I love the ones we have, but there is only so much room in our bed."

Siaxx slipped into a chair nearby with the cat in her arms. "Well.. I can't exactly rush out and pick up another cat.." she responded.

"That's a good thin' Siaxx," Phoenix half-heartedly teased as she caressed Dora's back.

"What...keping up with these two is a full time job.." as she held up the cat. "especially you little man.. you should be glad you don't have to pay child support, considering how many girls you've been with recently.... I think Rachael still wants to kill you and Hakaya isn't much better off."

Shonax wailed at her. "Meow!"

"He's a looker, I agree," Phoenix laughed, and playfully scratched his back. "But I think it's time we set him up with an appointment ta get his bits lobbed off."

Saki blinked her eyes. "Bits lopped off?" the small child inquired.

"It means that Shonax here can no longer father kittens.." Siaxx responded before she gently set the cat down.

"Thats barbaric." Saki growled.

"It can be a bad thing ta let wild and domestic animals have babies. More so when they run all over tha place," Phoenix tried to explain.

Saki growled. "Its still bullshit!" the eight year old responded.

"Saki." Siaxx responded as she regarded the eight year old.. "losing your temper won't help the matter.... and swearing will just irritate others. I get that you hate it... I don't like it either.."

"Beastie aint gonna feel it, Saki." Phoenix became very apologetic to the girl. "Doc gives him somethin' ta nap for a while, along with somethin' ta kill tha pain. So he don' suffer at all."

Saki raised an eyebrow. "I see..." she responded. "I don't gotta like it.."

"Lots of stuff I don' like in this universe Saki," Phoenix explained with a small yawn. "You can try an' change 'em, but you can' change everthin'."

Saki sighed. "Yeah..." the child sighed as she watched the cat hop up onto the sofa before Saki gently picked him up. "Hey kitty..."

Shonax wailed at her as she set him down in her lap.

"Best ta let him come ta you," Phoenix suggested. "It's all 'bout trustin' ya, with pets. Ya gotta let 'em think you're safe, an' 'at you aint gonna hurt him."

Shonax meowed as he curled up in Saki's lap as he gently started purring. "How can know the mind of a cat..." Saki responded. "He's purring.." she added as she gently ran her fingers over his soft fur. "I assume he simply takes what he wants and I will deal with it when it happens?"

Meanwhile the cat was batting at Saki's shirt with his claws. "Mmm..." she paused. "Aunt Phoenix... do you have any string?"

"On me? No," Phoenix answered. "He might have a feather in his toy chest though. Or in his scratchin' post."

"I'm wondering how he reacts to string..." Saki admitted as she regarded the cat who seemed to be very comfortable.

"Cats aint very smart when it comes ta toys like 'at," Phoenix laughed in kind. "They'll bat at stuff like that all day."
