Petty Officer Second Class Saki Kishimoto turned her head from the left to the right as she held her spear in hand, she was looking after Rachael as the two of them were returning to camp after a largely fruitless expedition around their base camp to try and find some food.
Rachael meanwhile was carrying some firewood as the two of them heard a noise, Rachael stopped and turned as Saki shoved her out of the way as an ambush predator appeared and one swipe of his head as a battering ram, it smashed into Saki's back but then with one bite, snapped off Saki's arm.
The larger woman screamed, dropping her spear which Rachael snatched up and with a loud scream of her own, she slashed it into the massive Orobird.
Teval and Hakaya, whom where several hundred meters away, heard the scream, and snatching their rifles, they ran in the direction of the scream.
The Bird reacted angrily as it took a swipe at Rachael, it missed only because the child was already moving, she then thrust the spear at the bird a second time, stabbing it in its guts before the Orobird's head suddenly and inexplicably exploded, it wasn't until much later when Rachael realized that someone else had shot it with a particle weapon.
Once the threat was over. Rachael went over to Saki who was trying to stem the blood loss but she was failing badly. "Shit... " she sighed.
After a minute of fighting his way through thick brush, Teval and Hakaya made it to where Rachael and Saki where. Hakaya immediately noticed Saki's injuries and tapped her combadge saying," Siaxx, we need you here right now, are the runabouts transporters still working."
"I don't have a lot of power... but they are working yes." Siaxx's voice came back. "I can however beam you guys back..."
Hakaya nodded," Beam back Rachael and Saki, me and Teval will walk."
Rachael wrapped the stump tightly with what she had with her. "Come on... lets get you home..."
"The firewood...?"
"I'll come back later with Siaxx for it... and for that.." she indicated the body of the massive bird. "I didn't kill it... but something did."
Saki sighed as she tried to stand up, the blood flow increased from her wound as a result and she fell over again with a cry. Rachael came over to her again as she felt the transporter beam her and Saki back to the runabout.
"Siaxx!!!" Rachael called, not seeing Siaxx at first as the Bolian woman looked at Rachael. "I'm right here... what happened?" she came over to begin working on Saki's wounds.
"We were attacked.. Orobird.. it caught Saki here."
Saki looked to be going in and out of consciousness at this point as she moaned. Siaxx gently helped Rachael with the badly wounded woman as they hauled her onto the table they had turned into a medical area.
Teval examined the dead bird, having quickly determined that someone else had hot it, as neither he nor Hakaya had managed to get a shot off at it. On top of that, their rifles wouldn't inflict this level of damage. He didn't see or hear anyone nearby, and he didn't recognize any unusual smells in the air, but something told him that they where not alone on this planet. Teval looked up at Hakaya, and he didn't need her to tell him that she was having the same conclusion. Without a word the two of them went back to the runabout.
Meanwhile Rachael was assisting Siaxx with the battle to keep Saki alive. "Okay..." Siaxx nodded. "Her chest cavity is filling with blood... she's got a punctured lung and... a ruptured spleen." the Bolian looked at Saki, eyes wide. "I'm going to loose her.."
Rachael didn't argue as she brought over both medkits. "Siaxx...Lets try to save her... we do nothing, she will die... at least lets give her a fighting chance to live.."
"Right.." Siaxx shoved her grief aside as she went to work.
Minutes later, Teval and Hakaya walked into the runabout, noticing both siaxx and Rachael where busy, and teval simply went to the back, gathered up his kittens, and walked back out of the runabout, not wanting to be in the way. Minutes later, Karryn and Aerin walked up, with Karryn saying," Well, I found a nice cave system that we can live in, its about a kilometer away from here."
Teval just looked at her, responding," Yeah, we have a serious problem, Saki has been badly injured by one of those big birds, not sure if she will make it."
Karryn went over to the runabout but Teval simply said," Best just to say out of their way for now, Siaxx is dealing with it as best she can."
Siaxx meanwhile was fighting to keep Saki alive and over the course of ninety minutes, she was able to stabilize Saki's wounds and somehow breathe new life into the woman's shattered body.
Saki was lying on the table with Rachael in a chair with Siaxx standing as the human woman came to. "Mmm..." she moaned softly.
Both Rachael and Siaxx both turned their attention to Saki. "Hey.." Rachael greeted the larger woman.
"Rachael... don't blame yourself for what happened... It was just bad luck... but you did good... you saved us both.."
"I should have-"
"Blaming yourself is inevitable... Don't... not for me... You didn't cause this..." Saki turned to Siaxx. "Give me all the bad news at once Doc... I can't feel my legs.."
The three of them were interrupted as Teval came in.
Hakaya followed her brother in, not saying anything as Teval simply said, "So whats the news."
Siaxx turned to Teval. "Its bad.." she sighed. "I'm going to loose her.. all my medical tricks and... " she stopped as Rachael spoke up. "Her back is broken... she's also got a punctured lung, that's why you're having issues breathing.. among other things.."
Siaxx tossed in "She's bleeding internally and I can't stop it."
Saki inquired, "How long?" she was calm and collected about it.
"Four days...six at most.." Siaxx responded, her voice sounding like wet sand falling onto a paved surface.
Rachael's eyes began to well up with unshead tears as she found she couldn't speak. Saki simply nodded. "Then... lets discuss other things while we have time to discuss them.." Saki commented. "Rachael.. I'll need a large Japanese funeral urn, one with a the intricate craving of a ying yang on the lid with a dragon around the outside of the base." Saki explained the color, size and dimensions of the urn in question.
"I'll take care of it." Rachael responded.
"Alright... Now... Since I can't feel anything below my neck... I can't commit seppuku." she said amid a soft coughing sound. "I would be eternally grateful if... one of you... would release me from this and help me end my life with a measure of dignity."
Teval just looked at Siaxx, saying," Well, if its what she wants, I wont stand in your way."
Siaxx gently administered a sedative to her friend. "Sleep now Saki..."
Saki closed her eyes as if she knew what was coming. "Thank you..." she whispered before the group moved up to the front so they could chat in peace.
Siaxx sighed softly. "I can do this one of two ways, let her linger or end it quick... in the end.. I have no choice." she paused.
Rachael tossed in. "We don't have the medication to make her OD.... But whatever we do, we have to do it quickly."
"I'll take care of it." Siaxx answered softly.
Rachael nodded her head. "I'll go and prepare her funeral pyre.. and I'll replicate an Urn to keep her ashes in.." she went over to the replicator as she selected the size of urn that she wanted.
Rachael watched as it appeared on the pad, she picked it up and went outside, as if she couldn't stand to be inside any longer.
Hakaya wordlessly walked out as well, just leaving Teval in there with Siaxx and Saki, he didn't know what to say, but he knew what the remaining options where, use his sword, or one of the phasers. He didn't care for either option.
Siaxx nodded as she went to the emergency locker, she selected a type two phaser. "I'll take care of this... " as she hefted the phaser and then she went into the back. "Saki, my friend, my comrade... my sister... I am sorry.. for what I must do..." she whispered under her breathe. "Alright.."
Siaxx held the phaser before her, she carefully set the phaser to ensure it would serve its lethal job and then she lifted it to aim at Saki. "I hope your family forgives me..." and with that she fired.
the noise of the blast was loud as it struck Saki in the center of her chest, she didn't seem to notice other then she stopped breathing.
Siaxx closed her eyes as the tears that would not come earlier now threatened to drown out everything else as she fell to her knees.
Meanwhile Rachael was outside as she felt the wave of pain from Siaxx and the silence where Saki once was as she burst into tears herself, she knew what had been done and why it had been done.
A while later, Siaxx slowly stepped out of the Runabout as she went over to assist Rachael with building the funeral pyre, her pain clear for all to see, her face was puffy and her eyes shone with tears, both shed and unshed.
"Siaxx.. help me with this.." Rachael said softly. "We'll do it this evening. When everyone is here..."
"Okay." Siaxx whispered. "Lets do this.."
