A Serious Problem

Mission: Mission 23: Foundations of Stone
Location: Various Locations - USS Roanoke
Timeline: 0900Hrs - January 28th, 2391

Hakaya took a seat by her brother, whom was lying curled up on the couch with his tail wrapped around him. She gently rubbed Teval's ears, causing him to purr like a kitten, "I take it you are not going on duty today huh."

Teval lifted his head up slightly," No not today, I'm not really into dealing with the mess on the deck right now, sorry about that."

Hakaya shrugged," That's all right, I've been handling it myself the whole time anyway."

Teval didn't say anything as Hakaya added," Well I gotta go anyway, I'll be back later."

Teval gave a slight nod as Hakaya walked out. Before he knew it he fell asleep, and didn't wake up until the door chime went off an hour later.

Torilla Yamaguchi was standing outside Teval's quarters, she was concerned about him as he didn't show up for a briefing on the Wing which Torilla was present for.

Teval didn't immediately respond, but after the third time, he finally said weakly, "Come in."

The door opened and in came Torilla. "Hey Teval... you feelin' alright?" she inquired as she looked around the darkened room, trying to see him. "where are you?"

Teval stirred ever so slightly, saying," I'm here."

"Okay..." Torilla picked her way over to him, she knelt down beside him. "Hey... you missed the briefing.." as she regarded him in the darkness. "You feeling up to getting out of bed?" Yamaguchi was concerned, it came through in her voice.

Teval barely moved," No not really."

"Okay... you're going down to sickbay... come on." as Torilla gently reached over to pet him. "Wow... you feel warm.." she paused. "Come on... I'll carry you."

Teval felt a very sharp pin in his abdomen as Torilla picked him up. He moved very suddenly, causing Torilla to drop him to the ground, in which he immediately began to puke up blood. There was a blood stain on the couch as well.

"Holy shit!" Torilla gasped as she moved back one step. "How long have you been like this?" she inquired as she suspected she already knew the answer, it was one she would not like and she knew it.

Teval didn't immediately answer, though when he did, he managed,
"Thats the first time I've done that."

"Well.. its gonna be the last time big man." Torilla tapped her combadge and called for a site to site, their destination sickbay as she gently with grace and tenderness, she gently plucked him into her arms again. "Easy..." she said right before the transporter room beamed them both to sickbay.

Sokanon was on watch at the time, she made it a habit to not call Siaxx for every stubbed toe and every hangnail. She turned as she went over to Torilla. "Let...Oh shit.." she commented. "Bring him over here." she barked at Torilla who wasted no time in arguing.

Torilla gently set Teval down on one of the biobeds as Sokanon ran her series of tests. "Commander... what happened to you?" the Caitian asked the Kurokuri.

Teval winced in pin, he felt like his lower body was on fire, though he managed to say weakly," I don't really know."

Sokanon ran her test as she blinked her large eyes in surprise. "I can't find a single thing wrong with you."

"The mouthful of blood I got over my boots tells me otherwise Doctor... check his abdominal area..."

"I can detect his medical nanites..." Sokanon narrowed her eyes as she read the display on her tricorder. "Teval... were you shot during the Breen incident recently and was it ever treated?"

Teval nodded, though didn't say anything. the injury was still somewhat visible, as his fur in the wound area was still a bit shorter than normal.

Sokanon gently scanned the area. "Mmm... well... I found the cause of your issue..... one of your implants has been damaged." she looked at Torilla. "I have no idea of how to treat this injury.."

Windspirit, whom had been observing, also didn't know how to deal with the issue, so she called for Hakaya and Aerin to come to sickbay. As soon as they came in, Hakaya, whom was very restless, asked," What happened."

"Ahh... just the woman I need." Sokanon muttered. "Hakaya, we have a problem... Lets go into the Doctor's office..." the Black furred Caitian
turned and lead Hakaya into the office, she turned as soon as the other Kurokuri was in the office and she laid it out for her.

"Okay Teval has been having this issue for some time... he vomited blood when Commander Yamaguchi went looking for him... apparently he missed a briefing or something.." she waved her hand to say she didn't care about it. "She found him, then she saw he wasn't well after throwing up on her.." the Caitain commented. "one of his abdominal implants is not working... its attacking his digestive tract.."

The Caitian sighed. "I have no idea how to treat this.."

Hakaya looked at Aerin, whom was there as well, and he explained,
"Yeah, the implant is definitely not supposed to be doing that. It is designed to produce nanoprobes that act as a booster for the immune system The nanoprobes are intended to attack and destroy viruses and other pathogens that a normal immune system cannot handle, including stuff like bio engineered weapons. Its probably why the virus that hit the ship had no effect on any of us kurokuri, because we all have these implants. Normally they are supposed to be checked every so often, but the federation is not familiar with them, and neither myself nor Karryn have the medical training to deal with it."

Sokanon wanted to scream. "Okay.... well.. he is discharging blood." it was clear what she was getting at. "Do you know anyone who can help with this case?" she inquired. "I'm going to ask Lieutenant Furban to take a look at it in any case."

Aerin shook his head," No unfortunately, But I'll ask Kroo about it anyway, he is used to dealing with unusual tech as well."

Sokanon nodded. "Alright... I can't send him home in his condition... so I'm going to keep him here... " she mewled softly which was the Caitian version of a sigh. "There isn't much I can do other then make him comfortable and try and treat the damage.."

Hakaya nodded and promptly went next to her sibling, deciding she was going to stay by him no matter what. While Sokanon went to go get Nalla, Kroo came by and Aerin filled him in as to what was going on.

Sokanon followed everyone out of the office as she turned to her right, she went over to the lab as she tapped the door chime.

"Open," Nalla called out from behind a pair of goggles as she worked on her transport device.

The door opened and in walked Sokanon. "Doctor Furban, we have a situation... Its a malfunctioning implant located in Commander Teval's abdomen." she handed Nalla a PADD with the diagnosis on it. "My tricorder scans Doctor.."

Nalla set her engineering tools down on the table long enough and looked closely at the data. She did not like being disturbed, but the moment she read the scans, her implants light up.

"Get him on a genericillin drip and set him up with a dextrosaline solution," Nalla ordered. "And if that does not stabilize him within an hour, I want a dose of barium injected into him... Have the lab techs taken a blood sample?"

Sokanon nodded. "Right away... and no. The techs haven't had a chance yet.. I'll take care of it." the Caitian responded.

Nalla grabbed her portable surgical transporter and targeting pen before she stood up and headed out of the room. "I'll also need to know how much blood he's lost."

Windspirit came up and scanned Teval, then replied, "Significant internal bleeding, roughly 20 percent blood loss."

"We need a base comparison. Would someone mind fetching someone of his species. Preferably healthy. So we know what safe parameters we have to work with?" Nalla asked as she walked into the main room and snapped her transport device into the biobed. "I also need a general purpose coagulant."

Windspirit didn't exactly have to go far, as both Aerin and Hakaya were still nearby. She pointed out to Nalla, "Both Hakaya and Aerin are here and are the same species. Hakaya is also Teval's sibling, and I believe Aerin knows things about the nanoprobes that you may want to know."

"Then if you will, get some baseline scans of them," Nalla ordered to Windspirit. "And have a nurse put in the destrose drips, antibiotic line, and fetch me a coagulant."

Windspirit decided to point out, "We already have baseline scans on them, including Teval in the system."

Sokanon had expected the conversation. "Doctor. The items you requested." she placed a PADD and a hypospray. "The coagulant is in the hypo."

Nalla nodded, then put her leather gloves on before she hit Teval in the neck with a hypo. "What do we know about these implants?"

Kroo responded with, "You will have to ask Aerin Ranval about them, I am only marginally aware of what they do."

"Would you mind asking Mister Ranval over here then, Mister Kroo?" Nalla asked a bit shyly as she looked more as her tools than the others.

Kroo looked at Aerin and he came over, saying. "Ok, What do you need to know."

"We need to know what would cause his implant to malfunction. And if he can live without it, once removed. Or if he needs it replaced," Nalla informed her colleague.

Aerin sighed, then gave a full explanation,"What you have here is a rather rare defect among an implant like this, though situations like this usually only happen if the implant is damaged in some way. These implants are generally not easily reverse engineered, so its highly doubtful that it can be replaced or repaired with federation technology or knowledge, however, they can be safely removed without issue though. One thing to consider though, the implant is continuously producing defective nanoprobes, and the nanoprobes themselves have to be removed as well. Once the implant creates a nanoprobe, that nanoprobes instructions are largely hardwritten and cannot be changed by a significant amount. Normally the implant doesn't produce the attack nanoprobes unless it detects an infection, then it will produce nanoprobes specifically designed to remove that infection, regardless if its other nanoprobes or an engineered virus. But the nanoprobes that it is currently producing are instructed to attack Teval for some reason, and the only way to stop them is to remove them or disable them. I know that there is some Akurian tech designed to do just that, but I don't have it on hand."

"I have something that will remove them, easily enough," Nalla suggested rather confidently as she began to power up her device and pulled her targeting pen from her pocket. "But we will need to remove the implant first, and locate all the holes his intestinal tract has sustained. Since it is a demanding job, I will have to delegate those tasks to another surgeon, while I target and remove the nanoprobes."

Since she was one of the most experienced surgeons Available, Windspirit volunteered herself, "I'll handle that part." She then looked at Kroo saying," Though your help may be needed as well."

Kroo nodded," O.K." And both of them go to work.

Teval himself was still conscious, though by this time he was lightheaded as hell. He looked at Aerin without saying anything, while Aerin just calmly stood there. Karryn had showed up as well, though just so she could pull the extremely distressed Hakaya away. Hakaya didn't leave too quietly, hissing rather loudly at one of the nurses that tried to shoo her out.

"I just need to recalibrate my scanners on the surgical transport," Nalla told to no one in particular as she began to quickly work. "Once I have a clear scanning profile on the faulty nanoprobes, I should be able to target them within a matter of minutes and be able to extract them effortlessly, if not a bit tediously."

Windspirit didn't pay Nalla any mind as she realized the extent of Teval's injuries. Intestinal bleeding was not the worst of the problems. As she went trying to repair the damage, Windspirit found extensive damage to Tevals kidney's, Liver, and stomach. This was going to take a while. Meanwhile, Kroo did hear what Nalla was saying, and it caught his interest. However he decided not to ask at this time as he quickly realized Windspirit needed a lot of help with her task.

The door opened and in walked Siaxx, wearing a skirt rather then her unsual pants, she blinked as she noticed the commotion around one of the biobeds. "Whats going on guys?" as Shonax appeared from around the corner. He let out a loud meow upon seeing his companion.

Tienn meanwhile was ignoring Siaxx's comment as she looked at the others, or more specifically Hakaya. "Okay,... Enough... everyone except my patient is to leave... NOW!" as she growled at the assembled gathering.

Hakya gave Tienn a rather nasty Glare but refused to move. Karryn knew very well that Hakaya was ready to snap as her fur was standing on end, her tail was far puffier than normal, and her ears where down and pointed backwards.

Siaxx winced as she knew what was coming. "Tienn." the small Bolian called. "Step into my office...."

Siaxx smiled. "Its over guys... nothing more to worry about here..." she turned and went into her office, the Bajoran following her.

Siaxx sat down in her chair as she looked at the Bajoran woman standing before her, Shonax the cat hopped up onto the desk as he looked at Siaxx before letting out a plaintive meow. "Alright... I don't know whats gotten into you recently Tienn... but you seem to have issues with me."

"You're dammed right I have an issue with you... I think you're batshit crazy, you have no place on this ship...and you should be locked in a cage."

The cat hissed loudly as Siaxx simply smiled. "Fair enough..." Siaxx responded. "You are no longer my Chief Nurse as you've made it clear you can't work with me... I am stressed out of my mind Tienn... I have a lot going on and I need people who can help me sort this ship out... so I'm going to return you to nursing.."

"You can't do that..."

"I can... and I have." Siaxx didn't raise her voice. "You are also out of line... you made a private dispute into a public issue... I assume something is going on with Commander Teval yet you're not helping out... and you're also starting a second dispute... I find your conduct unprofessional in the extreme and I am done with it.... the rules are very clear and while I have my own issues. I will enforce them... I'm also starting with you."

Tienn realized that Siaxx was dead serious. "Yessir.."

"Very well... I'm going to assign you... to Toshnarr, you'll assist him with whatever he's doing.. and don't give him attitude.. otherwise... you won't like what I do to you.... now get out!"

Tienn turned and fled out the door and then she ran out of sickbay, Siaxx sighed as she tapped out her changes on the PADD before her, she rose to her feet and came around the desk.

She walked out into the regular sickbay as she observed the operation taking place. "Hakaya... you alright?" Siaxx asked softly.

Hakaya couldn't really answered, though her ears returned to their normal position and her fur looked less ruffled. Karryn, whom had her arm around Hakaya, said," Yeah, Teval is in real bad shape, and because of that, Hakaya here is extremely on edge about it."

"Ahh... how is Teval?" Siaxx inquired with a smile.

Aerin, having heard the conversation, walked over, not wanting to crowd the medical officers. Since Karryn wasn't fully aware of the detains Aerin explained everything that was going on to Siaxx and Karryn.

Siaxx nodded her head. "Alright.. you guys wanna come hang out in my office.... so we're out of the way?" she inquired with a smile. "Besides.. I've not seen you guys in way too long.."

Hakaya didn't protest as Karryn steered her into siaxx's office, with Aerin behind them. Once the door was closed, Hakaya collapsed into one of the chairs, looking very distraught. Karryn sat next to Hakaya, not really saying anything. Her pregnancy was now quite obvious, being more than two month along.

Siaxx gently rubbed Hayaka's shoulder. "He'll be alright..." the Bolian smiled as Shonax went over to Hakaya, he purred at her as he gently touched her with his nose. "Meow."

Siaxx meanwhile looked towards Karryn. "Well guys.. Help yourself to the replicator if you're hungry..."

Hakaya picked up Shonax and began to pet the purring feline, saying,
"You know, he is a pretty cat." A tear went down her face.

"It'll be okay." Siaxx reached over as she gently pulled Hakaya onto her lap while Shonax purred happily.

Siaxx gently ran her fingers through Hakaya's fur. "Don't worry about anything.... Teval will be fine... you'll see..." as a smile graced her lips.
