Mission: Mission 98: Building Our New Home
Location: Various Locations - Starbase Vanguard
Timeline: 1700Hrs - April 1st, 2393

Valerie walked to the transporter bay with her bags under her arms. A few weeks ago Valerie was retired and living back on Earth. Boredom and a promotion brought her back to the colors. She still had not received her uniform and was dressed as a civilian. As she entered the transporter room of the New Caledonia there were four Star Fleet personnel on the pads.

"Running a little late?" A young women with orange trim asked Valerie.

"Yes, I'm sorry. I'm not used to running on a military schedule anymore." Valerie answered.

"We do have a time table to meet madame." The young engineer stated politely but with an undertone of contempt underneath her smile.

"I'm not Madame, I'm an Admiral." Valarie corrected the engineer with a smile. The engineer smiled nervously back. Another officer clad in the tan of operations repressed a giggle. "I'm Admiral Dessaix. I'm the bases second officer and I'll be in charge until Admiral Duval arrives." Valerie introduced herself.

"I'm Lieutenant Shalvari." Answered sheepishly.

Valerie just nodded back. The transporter lighted up and as the light dissipated they were on the star base.

The lighting was only about thirty percent and not all the paneling had been installed yet. Two overall clad civilians were behind the control station of the transporter unit. One of the civilians was a short and thin human female. The other was a short and husky Tellarite.

"Get off the pad and report over to me. I have your quarters stations. Don't talk back to me either. I don't make the arrangements so I can't change them. I just tell you where to go." The Tellarite curtly told them.

The two young male human enlisted moved off first to report to the Tellarite. Valerie wasn't sure what words were exchanged between the enlisted men and the Telleraite but the transaction ended with the civilian yelling at them. Shalvari moved off next. The young operations officer looked at Valerie and in an over dramatic fashion bowed his head motioned with his arm for her to exit first.

Valerie was amused by the young officers antic. "No, you go first. I want to be last." Valerie ordered.

The smiling young officer moved off and Valerie followed. He reported to the Tellarite. "Lieutenant Maurice Crane, operations." He told the gruff civilian.

"You have state room 628." The Tellarite growled at Crane.

"It don't suppose you could say that with a smile?" Crane asked.

"Get out of my face you little sissy." He barked. Crane moved off and Valerie moved up.

"Vice Admiral Valerie Dessaix." She told him.

"Your out of uniform." He told her.

"And your out of line mister civilian." Valerie shot back. "Your not my supervisor"

"And your not my boss!" The male Tellarite got very worked up. "I'm doing my job, your not doing yours."

"Actually, I am your boss. I'm the commander of this station until Admiral Duval arrives." Valerie told him in a stern voice. She was no losing her patience with him.

"I work for Mr. Bayern. He is the Star Fleet Corp of Construction and Development officer assigned here. If you have a problem with me you can go cry to him." The civilian rudely replied.

"I intend to have a chat with him. His leadership style leaves a lot to be desired." Valerie told the obnoxious worker before moving off.

Valerie found her way to her quarters. As she entered there was no furniture in the quarters. "Lovely." Dessaix said with some frustration. "Computer: put me in contact with the acting quartermaster." She asked. The computer acknowledged.

"What do you want?" An aggravated woman's voice asked.

"Hello?" Valerie was a little surprised by the response. "Is this the acting quartermaster?"

"This is SFCC&D supply. I'm not going to ask what you want again." The woman's voice was clearly annoyed.

Valerie took a deep breath. She didn't want to cause an incident with the civilian workers. "This is Admiral Dessaix. There is no furniture in my quarters."

"We haven't gotten their yet." The voice replied.

"Very well," Valerie tried to restrain herself. "When will you supply my quarters?"

"In a week." The voice answered.

"What? But I'm living here now!" Dessaix protested.

"We have a schedule and that area isn't due until next week." The voice flatly replied.

"This is intolerable. Your going the furnish my quarters first thing tomorrow at 0900 hours." Dessaix ordered.

The women's voice burst into laughter. "Sure, if you don't like the schedule complain to my boss." The link went silent.

Valerie tried to get her back but there was no response. Frustrated, she replicated a blanket and pillow and went to sleep on the floor.
