"I wouldn't do anything to hurt her. Why do you care?"

"Why?" Beth smiled at him as she sipped her drink. "Because you are more of a man then most men I deal with on a daily basis..." she commented. "they want me in the most basic way... you want more than that... "

I can sometimes be hard to remember or see..." she then smiled.

He took a sip of his drink, "So how were you able to do what you did, you know, the disappearing thing?"

"Ahh.." Beth commented as she drained half her glass of water. "Well there are two schools of thought one can train in... telekinesis and telepathy. Gabe has talents in telekinesis and Rachael has talents in both as does Mom... I have talents in telepathy." she explained.

Paul looked surprised, "Really?"

"I can avoid being seen if I wish..." she explained evenly. "I can sneak up on people and torment people..... my sense of humor is potent and aggressive.."

"And you don't get in trouble for it?"

"Not if I'm careful about how and when I do it..." she commented evenly.
"most when I'm out and about planetside... Where as here, I'm on small Starbase so I need not worry... unless some guy wants me..." she then shrugged. "I don't see that happening any time soon..." as she looked at him. "Rachael needs to keep up with her mental training... and.. as loathe as I am to drag someone else into this... she's been slacking off... could you do her, me and everyone else involved a favor?"

He exhaled, "Let me guess. You want me to make her train as much as she can. If it is that important, then I will try but it won't be easy. She is stubborn as a mule."

"No..." Beth responded. "I just want you to remind he that she needs to do it, pestering her won't work and neither will strong-arming her..." the older woman replied with a world weary sigh. "It is very important for her future.."

"Alright, I promise." It was all he could do.

Beth finished her drink as she looked at him. "Rachael chose well.... I wish I had her luck..." she commented. "and here I was thinking you didn't know anything about women.... and yet you surprise me."

He had to be honest, "I don't but I'm learning very quickly."

Beth smiled at him. "You're an optimist...and you're honest..." she explained. "I'd honestly forgotten what people such as yourself looked like.."

"If you grew up with a man that only cared about himself, you would want to be nothing like him too. I strive everyday to treat Rachael like she should be treated. But I'm not perfect either. I slip up like I did earlier. But really care about her. No, I love her."

Beth blinked, that statement was a real surprise but yet she found she could respect him, he was honest and that was something that was truly rare. "Ahh such honesty." she smiled at him. "I can respect that.... you have the courage to come right out and say that to me, a woman you hardly know... that's commendable.... I see now why Rachael thinks so highly of you."

"I think highly of Rachael as well. I think we just got off on the wrong foot. You are actually...cool."

Beth nodded. "I tend to be rather abusive with people.... Its something I'm working on." she explained. "I wasn't expecting you to be so... honest.." she
responded. "I'm glad I'm wrong.."

"Me too. I'd hate to think what you might have done to me." He flashed her a smile to show that he was just kidding.

Beth chuckled softly. "Indeed... What I can do would be illegal on most worlds... " she grinned at him. "I can lull people off to sleep with the most wonderful dreams ever or.... nightmares they will never forget.... I've never done it though."

"I don't think you better either. Unless...it is some idiot who is trying to woo Rachael, then, yeah, do it." He got an evil grin on his face.

Beth raised an eyebrow. "Oh I'm usually very subtle about it.... but then Rachael can take care of herself... she doesn't need me fighting her battles.."
the older woman smiled at him.

"No, she doesn't, does she." He chuckled, "Then I have nothing to worry about."

"Not from me. You might from my father but then everyone else in the family seems to like you... word of you is getting around and others in my extended family are hearing about you now as well.... My Aunt Talon will have her eye on you once you head off to the academy and she might request you when you graduate.." she explained. "my relatives might start fighting over you." she chuckled softly. "I'm not sure if that's good... or bad but... I will leave that for you to decide my good man."

"I didn't know that I was this important. I've never met a family like yours in my life. They are very close knit. My family was never close, never." It kind of made him nervous. He really had some big shoes to fill.

"Well they keep hearing about you." she smiled warmly at him. "I know we're having a family reunion sometime in the next year.... I think Mom wants to invite you.. I know Rachael will want you there."

"I will be there as long as it is before I have to go to the academy. And speaking of the academy, it's a decision that I just made and I haven't told Rachael or anyone else so don't say anything. So much responsibility."

Beth raised an eyebrow. "I was expecting a different response.... I have three uncles and five aunts, they all have between three and six kids each...all are married." she explained. "we are all quite close... I get on well with my cousins... and the stories are making you into something of a legend."

"I guess I am in shock, that's all. I've never been a legend or ever thought I would be. Now I am nervous, very nervous. Don't tell me anymore. I need time to take this all in."

"It was the same for Savannah... " Beth commented. "but you'll be fine.." she commented. "Mom likes you. Dad has yet to meet you though... but he'll listen to mom on this one." she commented. "but... so long as you remain true to yourself. .... you won't need to be concerned with anyone else... except Rachael of course." she then grinned at him.

"Whew! That's a relief. I think you better not tell me anything else. You're not helping easing my mind."

"Fair enough." she replied. "Well... you will only need to tolerate me for another couple of days before the cloud of doom, and myself that's under it will depart for the lunatic asylum, so I can graduate with my class of psychopaths later this year."

'Hmm?"

Beth's grin widened. "The academy, I mean.."

"Naah. I'm not putting up with you. I am actually enjoying talking to you." Paul smiled sat her.

Beth chuckled softly as she regarded him. "So how are you doing otherwise... are there many other guys your age here on base?" she inquired.

He shook his head, "Not really. A few but no one that I am interested in being friends with. We just don't have anything in common. And the girls are silly and at times, boring."

"Sounds like most other places I've been.... " she commented. "all the girls bore you... because of Rachael or in spite of her?"

"Rachael is fun to be with and I love her but she has nothing to do with why I don't want to be friends with the kids here. I'm not a prankster, I don't like many sports and I am not into dumb computer games. Don't get me wrong. I do like computers but I haven't found anyone who has my knowledge of them that is my age."

Beth raised an eyebrow. "So... what do you do with your free time, other then hang out with Rachael and do schoolwork together.... surely there must be something?" she inquired.

"I'm studying computers on my own right now. That is my plan for the Academy as well. I might even get into computer science as well." He spoke very proudly of his plan.

"Oh you want Science track?" Beth inquired. "If so... look up Professor LaSteel at the academy.... she's a friend of mine and she taught my Holo-engineering Advanced class... she's got a good sense of humor ad tell her Beth Yamaguchi sent you." she explained. "If you have any troubles.... go see her."

"Okay, I'll remember that." Just talking about the Academy made him excited to go.

Beth raised an eyebrow. "You really want to face the trials of the academy... don't you?" she inquired.

"For the first time, since I arrived on this starbase, I actually know what I want to do."

"Well... don't be in such a rush to leave the base.... and Rachael.... just keep in mind that she's almost three years younger then you." she commented.
"Would you wait for her or head off....know you won't see her again for years.."

"There are too many things that could happen during that time but I would wait for her. The same question could be presented to Rachael. I would hope that she would wait for me as well."

"You both ask much of each other...." Beth commented. "I'm sure Rachael will but.... you face other threats that are sure to want her.." she explained as she regarded him. "Anthony Donos for example, Rachael is one of the better looking girls in her class.... and she's about to be offered up as a prize in that age old contest.." she sighed. "it happened to me.... I have six boys wanting me and they all fought over me.... until I decided I wanted none of them."

Paul was getting aggravated now, "If she wants him, she can have him."

"Its not her you need to worry about.... its them.. the other guys." she looked
at him with her dark brown eyes. "Rachael will show she's not interested... it won't work."

"Why are you trying to discourage me from being with Rachael? You don't know how she will respond to these guys. You can just assume, that's all." He was now ready to go. He didn't want to listen to them anymore.

Beth looked at him. "I'm not trying to discourage you from anything... I am being realistic." she explained. "I know my sister quite well... and you need not worry about her...."

"But I do. Until I get a wedding ring on her finger, I always will."

Beth raised an eyebrow as she regarded him, she in truth wanted a man to feel about her the way this guy though about her younger sister but something jumped off of the page at her. "But after that?" she inquired.
"I would tread lightly if I were you mon amis."
