Fleet Captain Leila Reeves sighed softly as she went onto the main bridge of the ship. Commander Jason Sloup smiled as he regarded his commanding officer. "Captain." he addressed her.
"Afternoon Captain." Reeves addressed Sloup. She then took a seat in the chair off to his left. While he was only a commander. He was commanding his own ship. Thus she would address him with the respect he was due. She was a guest on this man's bridge.
Sloup regarded her. "Is everything alright? ma'am," he asked in a quiet tone of voice.
"Just a revelation from my father that my lost niece is not lost," Leila explained, a gentle smile on her face. "I'm looking forward to meeting her when we get back to Vanguard," she explained.
"Thats amazing news," Sloup answered while he smiled at her. "Somehow I don't think you'll want to head back early," he added.
"No. That will not be necessary." Reeves answered quietly. "It's only a couple of weeks, and then we're heading back to base anyway," she added. "Unless something comes up of course," she added with a bit of a sardonic smile.
"Knock on wood," Sloup answered, a gentle smile on his face. "A week's leave will be nice. I know it'll be nice to actually sleep in and not need to be up at the crack of dawn. Or what passes for dawn in space." he commented. "So, about this niece of yours. How did you find her?" Sloup inquired.
"It's more that she found my dad." Reeves answered. "Savannah was her name. I wanted to take her own, but I suspected my mother would have fought me on it. The JAG lawyer even said as much." Reeves sighed. "I couldn't help her." Reeves sighed softly, referring to her younger sister.
"You've carried that guilt around all these years." Sloup paused. "How old is she, if you don't mind my asking?" he inquired. "Your niece, I mean," he added for clarification.
"Savannah is twenty-six these days." Reeves answered in a quiet tone. "Dad told me she had never been adopted by anyone. She had spent her entire childhood in foster care." she then sighed while she shook her head. "I have no idea of what sort of woman she is. I guess I will find out soon enough." Reeves then smiled.
"Who knows," Sloup answered with a nod of his head. "Is she in Starfleet?"
"She is." Reeves answered. "What's more is that she's assigned to Starbase Vanguard. Apparently, according to Dad, she's married and has children of her own." she regarded Sloup with an overjoyed look on her face. "My children won't be the last refuge and hope for my family name," she added.
"Wonderful news," Sloup answered. "Who's she married to?" he suddenly asked a moment later.
"Yeah. I'm looking forward to meeting her. Her husband is the son of Torilla and Jake Yamaguchi." Reeves added.
"I don't know Admiral Yamaguchi. But Torilla." Sloup slowly smiled. "I remember her from my time under her command when she was commanding the USS America." he regarded Reeves. "If your niece's husband is anything like his mother, then Savannah will be in truly excellent hands," Sloup explained. "Torilla had a gentle approach to command. She encouraged people to be better than they were. But rather than push and prod. She was gentle about it." He smiled. "She taught me everything I know about commanding ships. I only sought to follow her example," he added.
Reeves smiled. She knew of Sloup's command style well enough and he had taught her a few things as well. Learning from Sloup was the main reason behind her last promotion to Fleet Captain and command of her own squadron of cruisers. "I know Jake better than I do Torilla. Jake was an engineer who should have remained in the engine room. But it was that skill and at times blind luck that brought him to the centre chair on the Courageous. My sister couldn't shut up about him." she commented. "When she left the Courageous. It was because she was being promoted to a better posting. First officer on another ship. She didn't wanna go but Jake told her to think about it." Reeves smiled. "In the end, she did take the posting. But it also set her on her life's path to her ex-husband. The monster that destroyed her." she sighed softly. "She didn't blame Jake for what happened and I don't either. Had Jake known what was to come." she then shook her head. "Who knows."
Sloup nodded. "He would have made other arrangements. He could have sent her to the USS America to learn how to be an Exec from Torilla. Now that would have been interesting." he added.
Reeves smiled as she wondered how things would have gone. "It's a nice thought," she answered.
