Free Souls - Part Three

Mission: Mission 57: The Northern Lights
Location: Various Locations - USS Courageous
Timeline: 1300Hrs - January 25th, 2392

Captain Torilla Yamaguchi was just back from the lunch break she normally took while on watch, but as she was sitting down the doorbell beeped at her.

Yamaguchi sighed softly. "I just sat down.." she muttered to herself, a sigh escaped her lips as she growled. "Its Open!"

Grey Wind lifted his head as he growled ever so softly. Torilla saw the issue as it brewed before she gently petted him, gently running her long fingers behind the back of his ears. "Its okay big guy."

The doors opened and in walked Lieutenant Garry Smithson. "Captain Yamaguchi.... Lieutenant Garry Smithson reporting for duty sir."

"Have a seat Lieutenant." Yamaguchi indicated one of the two chairs, off to Torilla's left was a small cat bed with a cat lying on it, the kitty turned its head at Smithson's approach when he suddenly realized that he was looking at two sets of goldenish green eyes. "Uhh..." he said with a mixture of fear and trepidation.

"Its okay... They mean no harm... So long as you don't harm me of course."

Smithson had no good way to react to that. "Ummmm of course sir..."

Nymeria lifted her head from the sofa as she regarded Smithson with a look before she lowered her head back down and promptly went back to sleep again.

Grey Wind emerged from beneath the table as he sat down next to Smithson, the dog sniffed at him but otherwise showed no aggression, nevertheless Smithson was still very much uneasy with the massive dog so close to him. "Ummmm he's .... not gonna hurt me.... is he"?

Yamaguchi shook her head. "No... He wants to know who you are... go ahead and pet him but be easy with him... He is fiercely protective of me and the twins.. as Jake found out."

Smithson gently ran his fingers through the dog's fur, he was gentle about it as the dog didn't seem to mind too much. "So.... Umm... What can I do for you Captain.... I got an message directing me to come and see you soonest."

"Yes.. I am looking for a Chief of Security... You were my first choice."

Smithson didn't stop to hide his astonishment, his first career track had been through security all through the academy and on his first assignment but it was on his second where he had been reassigned to Operations because of a punishment detail, which at the time had been drawn up by Torilla herself when she was serving as Executive Officer of the USS Roanoke. "With all due respect Captain .... Why?"

"Because... I wanted to see to it you got a chance to do what you joined up to do." Yamaguchi responded. "You'll be replacing Lt Commander Serrax T'soon'ah who departs for the Executive Officer slot of USS Warsong."

"Alright... I accept."

"Good." Yamaguchi responded. "Go see the quartermaster for your room assignment and be nice to Serrax as she'll still be around until tomorrow morning... I recommend talking to her about how she had Security." Yamaguchi explained.

"I'll do that sir." Smithson responded with a smile. "Thank you sir." before he and Yamaguchi shook hands. The cat meowed loudly at him, his movement near it was a surprise.

Smithson gently petted the kitty. "Sssshh... Its okay sweetie.."

The cat purred softly at him. "She's adorable.."

"He... His name is Jorge... I've been bringing one of them with me each day to work... the twins like spending time with them."

Smithson nodded as he rose to his feet. "Alright... Thank you Captain."

"On your way. Mister Smithson." it was Torilla's way of dismissing someone. Taking the hint Smithson turned and departed in silence.
