Mission 57: The Northern Lights

Timeline: 1000Hrs - December 25th, 2391
Fleet Command Master Chief Petty Officer Stephen McKnight smiled as he regarded his young wife as he gently held their son in his arms. "Hey Daisy, Look who wants to say Hi."
Edward was awake as he regarded his mother with his large brown eyes. "Ma." he got out.
"Aww!" Daisy gleefully let out. "He's talking. That's our boy! Can you say Daddy?" Daisy asked Edward with a wide grin.
The infant blinked. "Da... Dadd... daddy.." he stammered
"Yess!" Orthos gently cheered.
"So I guess we have confirmation now that he gets his intelligence from my side." Daisy smirked.
Orthos gave his eye a rather evil look. "Don't sell my genes short..." he responded. "My other children did alright.." he added. "Talk like that will get Christmas canceled..."
Daisy giggled. "Some one is being a Grinch." She looked back at Edward. "You don't want to miss your first Christmas do you?" Edward's only response was to laugh at his mother.
Orthos regarded his wife. "I will.. discipline you tonight for that." It was obvious what he was hinting at. "Nope.. Edward wanted you... Kept saying Ma for the last week."
"He's a smart boy." Daisy replied. "Santa will be good to you tonight Edward." She gave Orthos a wary grin. "And you too."
Orthos gave his wife a toothy grin. "You... are a tease..." as he gently ran her fingers through her hair. "Besides.. Its been too long."
Daisy blushed. "Yes it has been but we can wait until after Master Edward has retired to his crib."
"Indeed... Then I will.... discipline you for... your insolence." Orthos gave her a rather sinister grin before he turned his attention back to Edward as he moved over towards his mother.
"My punishment can wait." Daisy smiled at Orthos. She looked back at their child. Daisy tickled Edward's tummy and he chuckled. "I missed you."
Orthos was content to sit back and watch his young wife at play with their son while he sat, his back up against the sofa as he let out a breathe slowly. "Its exhausting.... chasing a child.. y'know."
"I thought Edward would be safer with you at Watchman Station." Daisy replied. "If you would like I can take him longer on the Argonne?"
"He is... Safe on Watchman with me, I mean..." he regarded his wife. "I'd like for the three of us to be together again." he admitted with a smile while he regarded his wife.
Daisy sat silent for a second and just blinked her eyes. "What are asking?"
"I'm not.." Orthos responded. "There isn't a lot I can do at present... so I'll carry on as best as I can... Someday you and I can work together again..." he sighed softly.
Daisy smiled. "I'll tell ya' what, if I get pregnant again I'll apply to be a reserve officer and come to live with you. That way we can be a family."
Orthos was touched by her offer. "I can't just let you give up on your career just like that... you worked too hard for what you have."
"I'm not resigning my commission, I'm just going into the reserve fleet until our kids are older." Daisy told him. "And the big 'IF' is if I get pregnant again and I don't have any plans for that."
"Well... I've not been planning for it either.. I've more or less been leaving it up to you." Orthos responded. "Do you want more?" he inquired.
Daisy sat in silence as she thought. "I'm not sure. Edward has been such a blessing. I'm happy with just him and I'm not sure if I would be ready for another child."
"Then don't have any more.." Orthos responded. "If you don't feel you are prepared... then don't... and I won't force you." as he gently gave his wife a kiss on the cheek. "Besides... Edward is enough for now... maybe someday.. that will change but for now... I'm content with just him." as he gently slid an arm around his wife's shoulders. "Besides... I see no need to change the nature of the relationship we've built together."
"Thank you, that is comforting to hear." Daisy gently smiled. "I just wish we were together more."
"Yeah.. It sucks that we're apart but... I endure and he does alright." Orthos indicated Edward. "Also every other McKnight says Merry Christmas."
"I hope they're as content as we are." Daisy replied. "What holidays does your family gather for?"
"Well. There are so many McKnight's now that getting us all together can sometimes be an exercise in futility." Orthos responded. "Getting all my children together takes months of planning but we were going to try to get everyone together for new years... they are all heading here to Watchmman... So I don't need to worry about it this year. Though I do think that going forward it'll be on Starbase 54."
"My family thinks sentimentality is for the weak minded." Daisy told Orthos. "Not surprising, we don't have family get togethers."
"You never speak of your own family." Orthos responded. "But... then I suspect that there is trouble there...." he sighed. "Besides... keeping up with my extended family.. even my division of the tree alone can be daunting... then there is Karax and Karass." Orthos paused.
"Not to mention my other three siblings... All of them have had children... and to to think that mom started out as the unwanted lost child of a Vulcan family that didn't want her." Orthos regarded her.
"That is very confusing." Daisy replied. "I think I might look like an engineer's schismatic rather than a tree."
"Considering how many of us there are... yes." Orthos responded. "I had five children with Vanessa.." he explained. "and all of those are married with at least three children apiece.." he paused. "All of those are children from infants to teenagers.. my eldest's eldest son. Ian just had a child of his own with his girlfriend. So now.. Iason is a grandfather.. and I'm a great grandfather." Orthos regarded Daisy. "and Edward is younger then Mackenzie."
"Yes," Daisy replied. "I'm kinda confused right now."
"It'll be fine... You've not met many of them.. Besides.. All my other children like you and so does mom. Don't worry about it.." Orthos responded. "Besides... You've yet to meet Dad."
"I thought your father was dead?" Daisy asked.
"No... He's still alive... but he's long since retired.." Orthos responded evenly. "But he;'s still healthy and he has and I quote "so many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren to spoil rotten."
"I don't remember you mentioning him before." Daisy told Orthos.
"I had my reasons." Orthos admitted. "I wanted you in my life for you... not because of my rather sizable family." he explained. "I didn't tell you any of this because I didn't want you thinking you had to measure up to a certain ideal or think and act a certain way.... You've met some of my children and siblings... Especially Karass." Orthos explained. "How do you think they feel about you.... and how do you feel aobut them... considering that all of my children are older then you and they have about twenty grandchildren between them... and one of them has a child of his own.?"
"I don't think love follows a calendar." Daisy replied. "Have any of your children made our ages an issue?"
"If they have, they have not mentioned it to me." Orthos responded evenly. "Besides.. They are never subtle, if they had issues. they'd tell you to your face and with me around too... that way so we both knew."
Orthos explained. "Julia and Mary both seem to like you. Same with Iason"
"I think you have Vulcan body aging and Human mental aging." Daisy told him. She gave him a warm smile. "For a Vulcan you are still young."
"Hell... Mom is still young." Orthos regarded his wife. "I got my kids, my grandkids and one of them is having great grandkids... and mom is young enough to have more children if she wanted them." Orthos regarded his son with a smile. "Besides.. After he retires... I am going to take you back to bed and have my way with you... any objections?"
"I'll consider that a promise." She replied. "But first, Edward needs to unwrap his first Christmas present."
"Yes he does.." Orthos responded before he gently lifted a small box before placing it before Edward. "Go ahead... rip it open."
Edward grasped the item before he started to tear off the wrapping paper, within moments his gift appeared as it was a plushie that was a decent size, it was of an Andorian female. "Getting the specs into the computer required a little work... but Froststorm was most helpful."
Orthos explained. "You recall Ryi Sh'Amlari... right?"
"Recall her? She was in my rifle platoon before she became a pilot." Daisy told Orthos. "She almost blew us up when we were doing explosives training."
Orthos smiled. "Right... Now I remember." he responded.
Edward grabbed the Andorian plushy and cuddled it.
"Seems like you you found him a good present." She told him.
"Maybe someday he'll get to meet the Andorian behind the plushie." Orthos regarded his wife. "Besides... Froststorm sends her regards."
"I'm glad things have worked out for her." Daisy told Orthos. "Maybe Edward will meet her. Hopefully she will have a family of her own."
"We can hope." Orthos responded. "Andorian bondmate groups are... complex... with four people involved." he tried not to chuckle as he smiled. "with two girls and another guy in the same bed I imagine that gets... complicated."
"Ya, Andorian procreation confuses me." Daisy admitted. "You should be proud that you got a present Edward enjoys."
Orthos regarded his wife with a chuckle. "Its complex." he agreed. "Its best summed up as inviting another woman and another guy to bed with us." Orthos smiled. "Mmm... That could be... diverting." as he gave his wife a look.
"Umm...no." Daisy responded. "I'm selfish when it comes to you. I'm the only partner your allowed to have."
Orthos chuckled softly. "and I will reward you... for your greed in me." he gave her a rather evil smile. "After the liege-lord retires of course."
"Well his royal highness now has a cuddle buddy." Daisy stated. "He should sleep soundly tonight."
"We can only hope... right." Orthos inquired of his wife.
"I'm sure he will." Daisy then kissed Orthos' forehead. "We'll have enough time for each other tonight."
"Yes we will." Orthos grinned at her. "Besides..." he indicated their son who as sitting down, holding the plushie in his arms. "I will have to tell Ryi that her gift idea was a smashing success." his chuckled. "I'll have to share it with Master Sergeant Duval too.."
"So it was her idea to give a plushy of herself?" Daisy asked.
"It was.." Orthos responded. "I wasn't sure of what to get Edward for Christmas... she mentioned a plushie and I mentioned why not one of her... she was curious.... I get to tell her the results."
"Unorthodox but it worked." Daisy told him. "I bet he's the only child on the ship to have one."
"Oh.. I'll bet good money on it." Orthos agreed with his wife's comment with a smile. "Besides... he doesn't seem to mind the end result."
"No he doesn't." Daisy replied. Edward yawned and then curled up in a ball with his plushy. "I think it's bed time."
Orthos smiled. "I do too.." he responded as he regarded his wife before he gently picked up his son and his plushie in his arms before he gently put their young son into his crib. He activated the baby monitoring system before he turned his head to regard his young son.
"I remember when Iason and all my other children were this age.." he mused quietly. "Sleep well Edward." before he quietly took his leave, giving Daisy a moment with her son alone.
Daisy came out of the baby's room. "Edward is tucked in and he should be asleep all night." She then smiled. "Now it's out time."
Orthos gave his wife a rather sinister smile. "Okay.." he responded as he went into the master bedroom, her following. "Now I will... discipline you... for your... lack of faith.." as he gently began removing his wife's clothing.
