Mission:
Mission 28: Those who Remain
Location: Various Locations - USS Dreamcrusher / USS Roanoke
Timeline: 0800Hrs - February 26th, 2391
Captain Zuko Omakan, a towering 252 cm tall Ankuri, walked onto the bridge of the Dreamcrusher, saying to his Executive officer, Commander Kevin Mitchell," What's the assignment they got for us."
Kevin didn't even look at the assignment padd, knowing exactly what it was," Search and rescue, we are looking for a lost runabout, that belongs to the USS Roanoke, we are close enough to help, but they aren't assigning many ships to the task.
Zuko thought for a minute, then said," Roanoke, I have to say, I am not familiar with that ship."
Kevin looked at the Padd," Well, I'm surprised, most of the fleet has heard about it, they where the ones whom spread that computer virus throughout the fleet."
"Oh, that's who did that," Zuko smiled, "Well, aside from the annoyance of that prank, that was pretty funny. So where did the runabout disappear to."
Kevin looked back at the PADD, "Um, about halfway between Deneva and Starbase 12."
Zuko nodded, turning to his communications officer, "O.K. Well, hail the Roanoke first."
Zuko looked at the viewscreen as Captain Zara Tane came up on the viewscreen.
"Roanoke here. This is Captain Tane. Who am I speaking with?" Zara asked from her seat in the center chair.
Zuko introduced himself, "I am Captain Zuko Omakan of the USS Dreamcrusher, I have been ordered to join your task force to search for your missing runabout."
"Any help is appreciated, Captain. I know my CAG will be happy to have more eyeballs for sure," Tane smiled brightly to that.
Zuko shrugged, "Well, I have my own ship, plus six recon flyers, and about a dozen recon drones, though I am not too sure about their reliability."
"We'll whatever resources you're willing to use," Zara assured him. "What's your ETA?"
"We should be there in 30 minutes to an hour, barring any drive malfunctions. This ship just got commissioned a few weeks ago and we haven't fixed all the loose screws yet."
"If you do have problems and need a hand, I'll be sure to send some engineers your way," Tane promised.
Zuko shrugged, "eh, shouldn't be a problem, not with a staff of nearly 200 R&D and SCE personnel onboard."
"I'm jealous," Zara laughed. "See you when you get here then. Tane out."
Zuko then closed the transmission, and had his helmsman set a course. He then looked at the ships master systems display, thinking. Dreamcrusher was his first command, a command he was lucky to get. The ship is the new pathfinder III class also known as the Guardian class, equipped with a matter energy conversion reactor, instead of a warp core, the first of its kind. Essentially a derivative of replicator technology, instead of storing volatile antimatter on board, the matter energy converter used replicator technology to dematerialize matter and convert it to pure energy. Though it wasn't much more powerful than a warp core of the same size, the hazard of a warp core breach was completely eliminated.
That wasn't the only upgrade of the ship. The ship also had over 1000 Verical launch tubes for various types of missiles, including the standard anti fighter quantum missile, among other types. Unfortunately the VLS modules sat empty as the missiles designed for them where not ready for deployment. He needed to wait a few months for those to be ready. The ship also had a revolutionary armor protection scheme that allowed the ship three times the unshielded armor protection over previous versions of the pathfinder one and two, known as the Pathfinder and the Renown, respectively.
Meanwhile, back on the USS Roanoke, on the main bridge, the turbolift doors opened and out came Commander Torilla Yamaguchi, she looked unhappy but that was her normal state of affairs these days. "Everything is statue que Captain," she said to Tane before she noticed the other Federation ship. "Did Jake come out here to help search for the missing Runabout?"
"Nope. That's Dreamcrusher," Zara supplied with a bit of envy. "Is it a bad thing that part of me would like to masturbate inside those nacelles?"
Torilla suddenly felt foolish, as she had mistook one Pathfinder II for a Pathfinder III. She'd heard of the Three variant but she'd never seen one before now. "Oh..." she paused. "She's a Guardian class... I've never seen one before..."
"Beauty of a ship," Zara agreed.
Yamaguchi silently moved to sit in her normal chair next to Tane. "Aye..." she responded quietly. "I wonder if they'll refit all the twos up to three specs.."
"If your husband gets one, I may have to steal it from him," Zara mused.
"Jake already has one... but she's a Two." Yamaguchi commented softly. "You think the Fleet will give you one of your own?"
"Doubt it... Thus I may steal one," Zara snickered.
"Liberate... you may Liberate one" Yamaguchi responded.
Meanwhile back on the Dreamcrusher, Zuko asked, "So.. We ready?."
Lieutenant Tasha nodded, "Yep, dockmaster has cleared us to depart.
"Take us out."
The Dreamcrusher moved smoothly out of spacedock and within a minute, they where cleared for Warp, prompting Zuko to say, "Alright, set a course for the Roanoke, maximum warp."
Tasha nodded and hit several commands, and Zuko felt the Dreamcrusher suddenly stop, and go nowhere. Tasha tried to fiddle with the controls more, when Zuko said with a smile," Can you get us out of dock without stalling."
Tasha looked rather annoyed," Oh hush, its not my fault this ship is uncooperative."
Zuko went over and hit several commands, causing the ship to move again, "Relax, the ship is different from what you are used to."
Tasha shot him an annoyed look as she brought the ship to warp.
40 minutes later the dreamcrusher dropped out of warp next to the Roanoke. Zuko got out of his chair saying, "Well, I'm going to go to the Roanoke to talk to Captain Tane, you have the ship Kevin."
Kevin nodded as Zuko went to the ships transporter room.
Standing in the Roanoke's transporter room was Commander Torilla Yamaguchi, she waited patiently for their guest to arrive.
Zuko walked over to Torilla after beaming in. Being an Ankuri, he towered over Torilla, and looking down at her, he said, "Hey Commander, I am Captain Zuko Omakan."
Torilla raised an eyebrow as she looked up at him. "Well now... the viewscreen doesn't do you justice.." she commented. "You are the single most massive being... I've ever encountered." she paused. "Captain Tane is on the bridge. This way."
Zuko quietly followed Torilla to the bridge, catching a lot of stares as he walked through the hallways. Upon entering the bridge, he caught more stare as the bridge crew all looked rather surprised.
Yamaguchi stepped around him as she went over to Tane. "Zara... meet Captain Kitty... I mean Zuko."
"Big Kitty," Zara half-smiled as she had to look almost straight up at him, being a short gal. "Nice to meet you, Captain."
Zuko shrugged, "Eh, my species isn't the biggest of all Akurian species, that prize goes to Velkuri."
"I can only imagine how large they get." Yamaguchi commented. "In any case.. We've begun our search for our missing Runabout."
"Just how big is the search area we've got? Because we need to know how many EWACs and scorpions to deploy, and how far apart, so their work doesn't overlap," Zara asked to anyone within earshot.
Luhanna Wintersnow turned her head as she came over with a PADD. "The details of our search grids sir." she handed it to Tane.
"All righty," Zara nodded and frowned when she looked to Torilla. "You want to tell Phoenix? Or shall I?"
"I'll handle it." Yamaguchi responded with a smile. "I've overdue for lunch anyway."
Zuko looked at the PADD, saying," Well, I have six recon flyers that I can add, twenty recon drones of questionable reliability, and a further six runabouts, the shuttles on my ship are little use for search and rescue, their sensors are too weak."
"All right then," Zara nodded, "Let's get the ball rolling then."
Yamaguchi tapped her combadge. "Yamaguchi to Phoenix. Could you come up to the bridge please."
"Sure," Phoenix responded and closed the link. It was several minutes when she resurfaced on the bridge with an apple in hand, chomping on it. "Hmm?"
"New data to search with," Zara informed, then pointed to the tall furry thing beside her. "Along with new assets to search with."
"We've just finished placin' sensor pods on the scorpions, so we can stand down half the Valkyrie force, at least in shifts." Phoenix informed and then took the data from Torilla. "Whatcha think? Maybe one plane/assets every over grid?"
Zuko explained the recond drones," Well, we have twenty recond drones that are equipped with good sensor packages, they're about as good as purpose built recon flyers, but their comm system isn't overly spectacular, and their very limited AI, means that these drones aren't that reliable, and will have a tenancy to drop their comm's connection for no reason. So it may be prudent to have a few fighters be on standby to retrieve any that drop off for no reason."
Yamaguchi nodded. "Yeah one to one sounds good... but I'm concerned about our pilots... I've noticed that some of them are logging lots of hours... over a dozen at a time...and one of them was over twenty hours."
"I'm not the one makin' log that many training' hours," Phoenix corrected. "But you make a good point. Rested pilots go first in rotation. All else in racks."
"Okay." Yamaguchi responded. "I think we can work with your recon drones Captain.." she said to Zuko.
Zuko nodded, "Ok, well, I'm going back to my ship then."
Yamaguchi nodded. "I'll walk you back to the transporter room."
Zuko walked with Torilla to the transporter room, not really say anything.
