Mission:
Mission 28: Those who Remain
Location: Various Locations - USS Roanoke
Timeline: 1900Hrs - February 22nd, 2391
Master Chief Petty Officer Stephen McKnight, more commonly known as 'Orthos' was sitting on the sofa, watching the wall monitor as he beheld one of his greatest hero's of Starfleet Legend, Admiral Marcus Ramirez's speech before the Federation council from a century and a half earlier. When he took command of Starfleet in the middle of the Four Years War.
"The greatest challenge lying before us... is not the might of a Klingon fleet... It is to do!, what must be done... without undoing the dream of the Federation.... compared to such a Loss.... I DO NOT fear the KLINGON EMPIRE!"
Orthos smiled as the doors opened and in walked Daisy, he recalled telling her that she didn't need to knock as he paused the playback.
On the screen the picture of Admiral Ramirez's face froze. "Daisy..." he paused. "I got a new job offer.... Master Chief Petty Officer of Independent Fleet Operations.... I'm going to talk to Admiral Yamaguchi and see if I can't get my billet assigned here... "
Daisy stopped to take in what Orthos told her. "I'm glad you got the position." She told Orthos. "Are you sure that can be practical? I mean, I don't want you to lose this opportunity because you think you have to be with me."
"I don't want you to have to face this pregnancy alone.." Orthos responded.
"That's sweet of you Orthos." Daisy told him. "I just don't want you to hurt your career. And besides, it's not the pregnancy that has me concerned, it's what happens right afterwards."
Orthos nodded, he recalled how Vanessa was after their first child came along and how she had various maladies. "I remember Vanessa's issues... But we'll manage..."
Daisy chuckled. "I've been shot by disruptors and survived alien biological weapons. I'm not too worried about post birth maladies." Daisy explained. "What I am kinda worried about is the little person we'll be responsible for. There is so much to worry about."
"I don't blame you." Orthos commented with a smile as he indicated the man on the viewscreen. "You remmeber him... from your history classes at the academy.... Admiral Marcus Ramirez.... related to me on my mothers side once removed.. He hated the Klingons... and I'm almost married to one.."
"My mother was Klingon and she hated them too." Daisy replied.
"I find myself asking why..." Orthos commented. "What causes someone to turn so completely against her own.."
"I'm thinking it was a blood feud between house. Ours lost." Daisy told him.
"Ahh.. which means that many of the losing house was put to the sword." he shook his head. "barbaric."
Daisy shrugged. "I'm half Klingon and those people feel alien to me. I can't relate to them."
"Fair enough." Orthos responded. "But at least you relate to humanity.."
he added.
"Well, yes." Daisy agreed. "I was raised in the Federation, just like our child will be." Daisy said while looking at her mid section.
"Sounds good to me." Orthos responded. "and.. if I have my way.... this child will be raised by the two of us together."
"Is that why you are trying to stay on the Roanoke?" Daisy asked. "To help raise your child?"
Orthos saw no reason to be subtle about it. "Yes. The baby is mine too.. I should be there."
"Yes, I know that." Daisy told Orthos. "My concern is that Star Fleet may separate us. They can be cruel that way."
Orthos nodded. "I know... I had a thought about that.." a sigh escaped his lips as he said it.
Daisy smiled at Orthos warmly. "Don't worry honey. When the time comes you'll do what is right. I have faith in you."
Orthos regarded her smile with his own. "I will be there for you and for this child.." he responded. "If that doesn't meet with Starfleets approval... then you know what?." he sighed. "they can kiss my ass.."
Daisy laughed. "Then it's settled." She went over to the replicator. "I'm hungry, did you want anything?"
"I'll just have a slice of pizza... double pepperoni and cheese..." Please and thanks."
Daisy placed the order into the computer. "Would you like a drink to wash your food down?"
Orthos regarded her. "You get your food and I'll handle drinks." He never liked being waited on hand and foot, he also saw to it that Daisy knew it too as he gently kissed her. "Let me wait on you for a change." he turned his head. "One coke-cola in a pint glass..."
The ice cold beverage appeared as he plucked it out of the replicator. "Shall we?"
"Okay, I'd like a lemonade please." Daisy told Orthos.
"Done and Done.." Orthos responded as he replicated an old fashioned lemonade, he turned and handed it to Daisy. "Here you go."
Daisy held up her glass. "Cheers."
Orthos clinked her glass against his. "Cheers..."
Daisy clinked glasses and then sipped her drink. "So, how long is this guy's speech?"
"Computer reset playback and play again from the beginning" he smiled. "It takes about five minutes."
Daisy had seen the Ramirez speech so many times it made her head hurt. Orthos, however, wanted to play it again so Daisy went along. It was only five minutes of her life. "Start it again Honey." She told him.
