Untethered

Posted on Fri Mar 6th, 2020 @ 11:25pm by Grand Admiral April Yamaguchi

Mission: Mission 71: Orion's Hounds
Location: Low Orbit over B Kayor
Timeline: 0900Hrs - March 16th, 2392

Fleet Admiral April Yamaguchi sometimes hated the trappings of her job, she missed being away from hearth and kin and most days these days it seemed that she was doing exactly that, being away all the time but April knew it was part of the job so once more, she shut her mouth on the subject and quit complaining about her issues.

Yamaguchi walked out of her office that she had been loaned for the duration of her stay as it was almost time for the exercises to begin. Along the way however she ran into a Caitian officer she had encountered a few times. "Morning Myzar.. You here for the exercises?" she inquired of the older Caitian.

Myzar gave off a short Purr. "Yeah, well you did call me here, so whats going on."

"Well I was doing some thinking.." Yamaguchi responded. "What about having your guys.. do some joint exercises with the Akurian fighter forces?"

Myzar gave April a Curious look," Yeah that might be doable, if the Akurians agree to it. I'm actually kinda curious how they operate myself. Federation fighter corps is so new I'm having to write so many policy's from scratch. I could use a few pointers."

"Well the Akurian guys will be a great help in that area.. " Yamaguchi responded with a smile. "Also they can help us with tech issues."

Myzar nodded. "So do you know where to meet their Fighter force commander then."

"More or less the same place we're going.. To observe the exercises." Yamaguchi responded evenly. "You;'ve never met an Akurian before.... have you?"

Myzar shook his head while his tail tapped the ground," I have to admit, never meet or seen one before."

"Well... I should clear something up then... There are several species who operate with that name. From guys half my height to guys almost twice my height." she explained. "the Kurokuri and the Jorkuri are the smallest, up through the Ankuri and the Velkuri topping out at about fourteen feet, give or take.." she explained. "They are... also what you won't expect... They will be forthright and honest with you but not to the point of being assholes about it, they are friendly and gentle, but they will tell you how it is right to your face... They also won't be shy about things either... You will probably get along with them... I know I do." Yamaguchi explained.

Myzar nodded. "Well the corps need a serious dose of honesty right now."

Yamaguchi took note of his change in tone. "I understand..." she responded. "Well these guys will help you in regards to sorting out matters of state."

Myzar then looked at his Padd, "Have you heard about the reports coming from Romulan Space."

Yamaguchi raised an eyebrow. "Some... but they are contradictory, at least the ones that cross my desk are... Why do you ask?"

Myzar explained his concerns. "Well the romulans have advanced their fighter and fighter defense technology crazy fast. It seems that the stolen Akurian tech has been making its way throughout the romulan factions. There was one notable engagement, where a single Reman controlled warbird, wiped out 500 fighters wilt little damage to itself. In response a lot of the new romulan fighters sacrifice everything for extreme offensive firepower and a cloaking device. That way their fighters can get within enemy fighter formations and unleash a massive payload all at once, while this usually ends up in the destruction of the attacking fighter, they can wipe out as many as 10 enemy fighters with that single massed missile volley. Now we have reports that the romulans are countering the casualty problem by using some kind of clone soldiers, but the federation doesn't exactly have that option."

Yamaguchi listened in silence. "So.. the Romulans have access to cloning tech... and a new heavy assault fighter... but both are in active duty." she paused. "Sounds like what we need is an AI... with maybe one pilot per squadron.." she paused. "Also we could use more birds... What about a separate force for planetary defense and smaller birds for uses on capital ships...?" Yamaguchi inquired. "Considering the advances in tech. I am surprised we don't have AI's helping us with warships and the like..."

"We already have separate ground based and carrier based fighters, Myzar explained," However what we need is a way for one person to be able to control multiple fighters, the way the Akurians can, and possibly upscale our fighters too."

Yamaguchi paused as she considered it. "Something like an AI then... I assume a standard computer system won't cut it... It generally isn't creative enough." she paused. "An Akurian style AI?.... Could that work... and would they share their tech with us?"

Myzar shrugged," unfortunately I am not really familiar with their AI technology or how it works so I couldn't tell you."

Yamaguchi nodded, in retrospect however she should have seen that statement coming. "I'll ask them... See what they say... If anything they can help us make a kind of AI thats easy to mass produce so we can fit them to fighters.. That is the end goal.. right?" she inquired as head of one branch to another.

"Pretty much, because unless we can come up with a way of making these fighters work, the federation will have to disband the fighter corps and starfleet will lose long range strike capability until we can develop some kind of long range cruise missile, which is also going to take a lot of time to develop.

"Alright.. I'll talk to them during the exercises today." Yamaguchi responded. "See what they say to us." she paused. "I can also inquire about their long distance ordinance,. See what they say to us on that too."

Myzar nodded but didn't really have anything further to say.

"Come on... Lets get back to our seats.... The show is about to begin."
Yamaguchi smiled.
