Mission: Mission 54: Where Snow Meets Sky
Location: Suakon System
Timeline: 1600Hrs - December 20th, 2391

The Hara Slipped out of warp and into the Myou system. The crew on the bridge were quickly going over their stations.

Lu'tar looked back at Jarok. "Everything thing looks normal, Captain."

Jarok nodded. "Thank you Mister Lu'tar. Alright, I think we are done for our patrol. Mister Harmon, put in a flight path back to the Roanoke."

"Aye Captain." Harmon responded.

"Wait!" B'mala shouted. "I'm getting a distress call."

"Put it through!" Jarok quickly replied.

"This is Saukon Prime, we are under attack from a Romulan ship! Please send assistance! Please hurry!" The caller's message was punctated by explosions in the background.

"Mister B'mala, send a reply telling them we are on our way. Harmon, set course for Saukon Prime." Jarok ordered.

Both officers acknowledged their orders. Jarok looked to Lu'tar, "What can you tell me about Saukon Prime?"

"Accessing the files now." He replied. "The Saukon system is in the old Neutral Zone. The Romulans gave up any claim on it after the Hobus Event. We have a small mining colony on Saukon Prime, about two dozen miners. Other than that, nothing."

"Why would the Romulans attack a small colony like that?" Harmon asked.

"Because the Romulans lack honor." B'mala replied before remembering Jarok was Romulan. Jarok gave B'mala a stare. "Present company exempted." B'mala edited her remarks.

"We don't know who they really are." Jarok told them. "They could be loyal to the provisional government or they could be renegades. We won't know until we get there. B'mala, let Roanoke know where we are going."

"Already sent Captain." B'mala replied.

Jarok nodded as the Hara dropped out of warp. "Captain, scanning the area and there is no sign of any Romulan vessel. I would advise caution as they may be cloaked." B'mala told Jarok.

"I am familiar with Romulan tactics lagh, thank you." The ex Romulan officer smiled at the Klingon. "Stay alert Mister Harmon, Mister Lu'tar, damage report on the colony?"

"The small outpost has been almost obliterated. The structures are still on fire and I cannot get better sensor readings." Lu'tar replied.

"Can you contact the colony B'mala?" Jarok asked.

"Negative." B'mala answered.

"Very well, we will send an away team down." Jarok told the crew. "B'mala, take three tactical officers with you and report to the transport room. Mister Garcia, take over tactical."

B'mala said nothing but smiled as she headed off the bridge.

Meanwhile on the planet surface, there were a few survivors of the Romulan attack. Nokaak moaned softly as he came to, his eyes fluttered open as he slowly sat up. "Hello?" he called softly.

There was no answer. "Hello?" he called a second time when suddenly a female voice answered him. "Hello... Nokaak.... That you?"

Nokaak paused, he recognized the voice as Taawr, another of the workers but he wasn't sure if she was alone or not as he gingerly staggered to his feet before setting off in search of her.

The four Star Fleet officers beamed to the planet. The beamed among the ruins of the colony buildings. Sh'ooli, an Andorian tactical officer, studied her tricorder. "Ensign B'mala, I'm picking up feint life form signals from below the ground."

"They must have taken shelter in the mines." B'mala remarked. "Chief Turner, take point."

The human leveled his assault phaser and headed off. A few moments later they spotted a miner hiding in the rubble. "We are from Star Fleet, identify yourself!" Turner shouted.

The Romulan let out a scream as he turned to flee, but he tripped and went down among the rocks and other debris.

A female miner poked her head out. "Don't.... Don't hurt us... the others already killed most of us... we're.... we're all thats left.." she whimpered.

"Don't tell them that... they'll probably want to kill us off.." the first miner said.

Suddenly a third voice cut in. "No, you two.. they are from the Federation.. we;'re safe now." the third miner paused. "We're in here!"

"Turner, Harlow," B'mala called, "Get those miners out and over here."

"Ensign, a team just beamed down to the planet!" Sh'Ooli told B'mala.

B'mala looked at the medic, "Get the miners checked out, Turner will stay here and provide security. Harlow, take point, I'll follow, and Sh'Ooli will pull rear."

The first miner was lying face down and he was immobile, there was a Romulan female over him, checking him over.

Harlow fired at the Romulan but missed. The Romulan took cover in the rubble. Several Reman commandos emerged from the ruins and returned fire. Harlow screamed as he was incinerated.

B'mala and Sh'Ooli took cover and fired back. B'mala tapped he comm badge. "B'mala to Hara, we are under fire from Remans. Request permission to beam up."

Jartok looked to Lu'tar. "Can you get a lock?"

"Negative, there is too much interference. I can only get them out by ones and twos." He replied.

"Do what you can. Harmon, keep an eye out for that cloaked ship." Jartok ordered.

The miners all gathered together as they spotted the Remans nearby. "Any guns here?" as they all began looking for something to fight with when one of them found a discarded rifle, he lifted it before taking aim and he squeezed off a shot which exploded a chink of rock near the Remans. "Take us with you." one of them said to the starfleet crew who were being evacuated.

Several shots rang out as the commandos flanked the away team. Turner sprang up and shot a Reman but in turn was hit and went down behind some rubble. Just as the Remans were going to overtake the miners and the away team several of the miners were transported away.

B'mala checked Harlow. "Dead." She said a loud. "Check Turner!" She shouted at the medic.

The medic scrambled to where Turner fell. "He's alive!" She shouted. B'mala acknowledged the medic.

After the miners were taken aboard B'mala signaled the Hara. "Hara, beam the four of us back up."

Lu'tar's voice came over the commbadge. "We only have three life signs."

"Lu'tar, the medic is next to Turner, beam them both up now!" B'mala shouted over the Reman fire. Then, the away team was beamed back aboard.

In the transporter room, the four remaining miners all were standing away from the transporter pad, they honestly looked like they had been through a avalanche or worse with their state. The leader hesitantly spoke. "I.. I am... I'm sorry about.... your man..."

B'mala nodded in agreement. "Jartok to transporter room, B'mala have any casualties checked out by medical. We will have a debrief after we leave the system."

Turner looked to B'mala, "I am not injured and would like to return to duty."

B'mala looked over the burn marks on the man's uniform. "Commendable, return to your station." B'mala looked to the miners, "Report to sick bay."

The miners all turned collectively and went out the door before the leader stopped. "Which way.... ummm Sorry."
