Rachael paused a moment as she nodded her head in agreement. "Go on." she inquired. She was no fool as she had heard variations of this tale before. Just not the unvarnished version.
Torilla lifted her glass to her lips. "What was lost at Wrymrest was beyond belief. We lost almost all of our history and knowledge. Which the Unificationists needed to dispose of anyway, if they were to start fresh with their own sanitized version of events." She slowly smiled. "Of course, the flights didn't leave anything to chance, including their histories or knowledge." She paused. "Multiple copies of the records were kept by dozens of people. It became something of a forbidden record to keep. When the first exiles began to leave Halaa. They took copies of these records with them. The hope was that maybe the past didn't need to die forever."
"But it didn't help that the genetic damage had already been done," Rachael commented.
"Yes," Torilla answered her daughter. "Over time, as things got worse. It started looking more and more likely that we were simply trying to outpace the inevitable." She paused a moment. "For three hundred years, we fought against the inevitable. The slow decay of time got worse and worse as the days became years. So the Halanan government began to desperately search for a cure to our woes. Then the Federation arrived. They were able to resettle our species in a new world. New Halanna." she paused. "They had named it New Halanna rather than Halaa. It was said that we were starting completely from scratch." She paused. "Yet, even after all this time, copies of our old records still existed and these were hunted down. Often with truly violent force." Torilla then shook her head. "Copies of our history ended up being lost to us, scattered across the astral winds of space and time. My parents somehow ended up acquiring a lost copy, which they gave to me." Torilla slowly smiled.
"Do you still have it, Mom?" Rachael inquired with a gentle smile. It was clear she wanted to read it. "I... I will admit that I want to have a look at it."
"I do. It's one of my most prized possessions." Torilla answered her daughter's statement with one of her own. "Which is fine. I'll make you a copy so you can share it with your own children," she added. "Maybe Saki will appreciate it. I hope she does." Torilla commented.
"Saki tends to mind her own council when she finds something intresting," Rachael commented. "It's because she fears some and mistrusts most people. Considering most dismiss her as a wild child. Rather than my daughter, who I had while I was stranded in a rural setting on an unknown planet." she explained, as a reminder to her mother.
"I know." Torilla then smiled. "Besides. I recall what happened when Elizabeth found out that everyone else thought that Kameron was Saki's biological father."
"Yeah. The fallout from that was epic. It wasn't until I explained the situation to her, which saved their relationship." Rachael paused a moment as she regarded her mother. She needed to make something very clear. Here and now. "But mom, for the record. No. Kameron did not ever have sex with me. He was a little too loyal to Elizabeth for that, and I wasn't about to let him bed me anyway. I wanted to avoid issues with Elizabeth. Not that it mattered anyway." Rachael then sighed softly. "I had to explain all of this to Elizabeth, including showing her that Paul Harrison was actually Saki's dad. Not Kameron."
Torilla paused. "Wait, you actually let her see that memory, of you and Paul Harrison having sex.?" she inquired. "Wow, you're either one of the boldest women I've ever met. Or you figured you had nothing left to lose."
"It was a bit of both, actually," Rachael answered. "I wasn't about to let her trash that relationship simply because Kam had been hanging ten with me for two years. Kam was a great help to Saki. I think he learned much from her, about how to handle children." she paused. "But that said, mom. Don't think I wasn't tempted by his proximity to me. Kam was a great company to have around and there were times when I figured. Fuck it. Let him have his way with me in bed, What's the worst he could do to me?. Impregnate me a second time?" she then let out a long soft sigh.
"What stopped you.?" Torilla inquired, with a soft smile on her lips.
"Tom Lasky did. He was watching out for us all. Looking after things with everyone. Hell, even Siaxx began to relax with him around. She was still mourning Greywolf at the time. I suspect that she still is."
"It's been three years... She's never gotten that issue resolved. I hope she does someday." Torilla sighed softly.
"Aye. I hope so too, mom," Rachael answered.
