Sorting out the School

Posted on Sun Mar 1st, 2020 @ 5:14am by Captain Edward Tuck & Fleet Captain Torilla Yamaguchi & Zuko Omakan

Mission: Mission 33: Losing the Peace
Location: Various Locations - USS Roanoke
Timeline: 0800Hrs - June 13th, 2391

It had been almost two weeks since the incident with Saki had forced Lieutenant Bernice Gyce to pull Saki and a few others out of school, now apparently Saki was doing much better being home schooled by Gyce. Torilla was supportive of the idea but she didn't want the Lieutenant to overwork herself.

Now Torilla Yamaguchi found herself regarding Captain Zara Tane who was sitting nearby along with a couple of the other officers who also had children in the school. One of them was the new Operations Chief named Rykar Julani.

"Alright.... So... what is to be done with this school system... I know what I wanna do but I'd like to hear other opinions and thoughts." Torilla Yamaguchi glared darkly at the school principal who was standing before her.

"I say assign a SRO to them. Lets kids know that even if the teachers are powerless to do something, law enforcement will," Zara offered uneasily, for she was not a teacher by any means. "Though, I should point out that Lieutenant Benice put in a request for Interrogation Room One to be converted into a small homeschool classroom."

Yamaguchi nodded her head. "Alright. I would prefer a volunteer from security but I know someone who's perfect for it." Torilla smiled.

"Oh?" Zara asked with interest.

"Yes... John Sheridan." Yamaguchi explained as a smile appeared on her face. "He's an asshole to those he hates... and he does not discriminate."

"So do we fire the civilians and screen for better teachers ourselves then?" Zara asked her staff.

Torilla Yamaguchi smiled. "Sure... we can terminate them with extreme prejudice... Wait... doesn't Dreamcrusher have their own school system?" she inquired.

"A relatively small one," Zuko answered, "Though our capacity is quite high, we just don't have many kids enrolled right now as we still have a lot of temporary crew aboard."

Torilla regarded the other being in the room who used to intimidate her. "Okay, so when will things be finished and sorted out?" she inquired.

Zuko shrugged, "Well all the school equipment is in place, it's fully functional, minus it having a relatively small staff at the moment. But that will be sorted out next time we get put in dock and all the temp crew gets moved out and replaced with our permanent one."

"Well... I personally feel that the school on this ship is not up to the task... considering that fighting is an everyday occurrence... I say we terminate the school when we get back to dock and find replacements worthy." she then shrugged. "or we can ask for volunteers and use the school based on Dreamcrusher." Yamaguchi commented evenly.

"Let's say I agree... what is done with our school?" Zara asked the group.

Edward Tuck looked around at all of the other assembled parents aboard ship before he spoke up. "I'll agree that it needs to be sorted out and cleaned out.... not taken out back and spaced.." he paused a moment "Still... considering one of the kids hit Ensign Yamaguchi with a baseball bat and they beat the crap out of someone else... the kids need to learn that their actions have consequences too...same with the various parents involved and the teaching staff too."

"...So you want to turn the school into a juvenile detention center?" Zara asked incredulously.

Zuko took a minute to respond, "Well,... um, yeah, that is a problem, but I don't think that moving the school to the Dreamcrusher will do anything to solve the problem. Yeah the kids would be safer should the fleet come under attack, given our ships extreme resistance to battle damage. But armor plating isn't going to do anything about school bullies and apathetic teachers."

Edward Tuck gave Captain Tane an odd look. "No... you misunderstand me." she responded bluntly. "What I am saying is that everyone involved is equally at fault. Parents, students, ships personnel... whatever."

Torilla regarded the older officer. "Well.. what do you propose that we do.?"

"We separate the people involved from those who are not.... we start with the school itself and the staff... if they don't care... then we're wasting our time."

"So we screen to see who is and is not willing to make this work?" Zara asked everyone in the room. "Sounds like a plan. Still need a SRO to keep the little pricks in line."

"Personally... I think we should look at the school as a whole... and see who needs to go and who we can keep... we need people who care... not weaklings who won't sort out discipline cases... one of the children in said school assaulted a Starfleet Officer with a baseball bat." Jiao Anderson commented softly. "We cannot permit this to continue... but terminating them all won't work as you'll have a vacuum of authority which will let these punk assed kids continu-" which was as far as she got before one of the other parents interrupted her.

"You watch your mouth, little woman..." one of the men growled at her.

Jiao Anderson slowly smiled. "Oh... you want to play.... fine, we'll see how you like it when I deprive you of your home for a week, forcing you to stay in guest quarters while I have your home taken away, your authority and your job too... I'll leave you with nothing... keep pissing me off... please.."

Torilla then added. "Enough..." she said it quietly. "Ensign Malarky, sit down and shut your mouth... your son is in enough trouble, do not add to it."

"He was defending himself."

"By assaulting Ensign Elizabeth Yamaguchi with a baseball bat." Jiao Anderson growled. "Frankly, your little bastard deserved what he got."

Rykar gave Jiao a look, "Lieutenant Anderson, you have neither the authority nor the justification to do something like that, so sit down and reign in your temper, making threats is not going to solve anything."

Ensign Malarky added. "Yeah Jiao... Maybe you should-"

"Be quiet.?" Torilla Yamaguchi inquired. "Yes please. Stop provoking the Lieutenant... or you'll have me to deal with... now, we're getting off subject. What are we to do with this school...?" the large woman commented.

"Close it for a week. Screen for who does and doesn't get cut from the staff," Zara suggested civilly.

Edward Tuck sat back in his chair, he had been called in to assist with the issue. "And then what?" he inquired.

"I don't have a fucking clue. I'm not a school board governor," Zara restored.

Yamaguchi slowly blinked her eyes as she regarded the smaller woman
"Maybe... Its time we got one..."

Rykar decided to interrupt directly, "Its doubtful that adding an extra paper pusher is going to solve our problems. The problem with the trouble making kids is quite frankly a simple one, bad parents. There are a lot of bad irresponsible people on this ship, because at the moment we are the admiralty garbage disposal. So naturally with all these stupid irresponsible people ending up on the ship, some of them have kids, and naturally, these people have no parenting skills whatsoever, and the kids just end up being stupid irresponsible failures just like their parents. And naturally with Roanoke's environment, decent sane teachers simply don't take jobs on the Roanoke. So unfortunately, this is just another situation where we are having to fight the ships reputation, and we are losing."

Lieutenant Tuck nodded. "She's right... so we need to deal with this on several fronts... parents, school staff, the crew who don't have kids and the contraband that seems to be everywhere." he responded.

Yamaguchi ran a finger ever so gently over her jawline. "So... get rid of all of the drugs, all the booze and whip this crew into shape.... so... either step up or step out of Starfleet.?" she inquired.

The schools principal who until now had sat in silence finally spoke up. "This ship is a failure."

"So are you." Yamaguchi responded with a smile. "At least we're working on our issues..."

"I'm not getting rid of my adult sippy cups," Zara spoke defensively. "...But maybe we could encourage rehab programs for parents."

Rykar then looked around the room, and noticed that none of the Kurokuri parents where present, prompting her to comment, " Looks like we are still missing a few of the parents as well."

"Teval and Hakaya are in sickbay, getting looked at." Torilla explained. "We still have no sign of Aerin either.." before she turned to Zara. "Rehab program for parents?. I don't see how a rehab program that's forced on these guys would work..."

"Sorta my point. Offer it, but don' force it," Zara shrugged.

Yamaguchi raised an eyebrow. "Alright... so for now, since we can't do a lot... We can ask Lieutenant Sheridan if he's willing to spend time as the School Security Officer and leave it with him until such time as we can get into dock and sort this school out there.." Torilla turned to regard the Principal. "Mister Nemzeki, please help Lieutenant Sheridan out in this regard so we can at least get something sorted out... "

"Okay... I still feel the children are the ones out of line-"

"Attend to your people and the school, leave the children to their parents..." Yamaguchi added quietly. "They will be handled in due time." she looked around the room. "Alright.... any questions?"

"I'm good here," Zara supplied.

"Alright." Yamaguchi responded. "Dismissed everyone." she said quietly
