Personality & Traits

General Overview In everyday situations she is gentle and soft-spoken, able to both quietly observe or to command a room if necessary. A patient and rational person, her rarely raises her voice above its usual rhythmic tones- and even then, only enough to draw the level of attention she desires, the exact amount a carefully calculated move. Keir is an emotional person, with strong feelings and equally strong opinions on many matters; however she has managed to reign them in over the years- at least in her public professional life. Those who are close to her are aware of her depth of character that goes beyond the often relaxed exterior. She can still be quite stubborn and refuses to let others try to intimidate her- she definitely does not scare easily, nor is she quite as innocent as she may seem in general.

Capable of projecting a reassuring presence, she can be extremely persuasive whether she is calming someone down or getting people to come to an agreement. She always believes she can take on just a little bit more, work a just little harder to solve that problem and can easily bury herself with that optimism. A scientific person, Keir is inclined to seek out an order in chaos and find the answers to questions.
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths: She's devoted to her work and her family.
Ambitions Keir has no specific desire to command a starship- being a department head is sufficient for her in that regard as her ambitions are not focused in that direction. Neither does she avoid it, it simply isn't her focus. Instead, she prefers to have power to exercise her specific responsibilities within her sphere of influence and expertise. She wants to figure out the next scientific mystery and bring a little more order to the world.
Hobbies & Interests She is fond of reading science journals, specifically those pertaining to astrophysics and microbiology, in order to keep up on the research being done by others. Consequently, even though she is not fluent in many other languages, she has acquired a technical knowledge of many more in order to be able to read primary sources. Keir also loves working in the lab and experiencing all manner of scientific phenomena, which is part of why she loves serving on a starship, for all the opportunities to experience new things.

While not the most skilled person in combat, she is nevertheless an athletic individual and loves to occasionally try out new programs in the holodeck. Some of her regular choices include rock climbing and trail running, as well as other outdoors activities such as horseback riding and swimming

Personal History Keir was born to two parents who were both heavily involved in the diplomatic corps, and frequently followed one or another on their assignments as they did not always go together. As far as childhoods go, it was not bad- she had parents that cared for her in their own way and many opportunities to grow and learn.

She was something of a rebellious child and thought she didn't want to follow in her parents' footsteps, and so she set herself on a completely different course. However, she still loved her parents and this action was not taken as a means to harm them. Keir simply felt the need at a young age to assert her independence and cast her own shadow.

So she focused on science, classes that she had always done relatively well in. With a great deal of hard work and determination, as well as getting an early start, she finished her undergraduate studies in three years and her Ph.D in another four. Much of her Ph.D research was done in conjunction with a Starfleet team as a provisional adviser and assistant, and by the time she completed her thesis she practically felt like an officer herself. After graduating, Keir served as the civilian director of a branch of that project based on Starbase Orion. With the recommendation of her previous Commander. Keir attended accelerated training and graduated with a commission of Ensign She returned to Starbase Orion to officially serve in the science department as the Astrophysics Chief before taking on the responsibilities of Assistant Chief. Most of her friends from her first assignment there, including her current husband, had moved on to other assignments. Keir felt out of place at first, but soon adapted to her new responsibilities.

From there, she was transferred to the USS Incirlik, a relatively small starship, to serve as the Chief of Science for two years. Keir greatly enjoyed her time aboard the starship and all the opportunities that came with it. It was a challenge, and not everything went well, but overall it was certainly a rewarding experience.

After those two years, she got a tempting offer to serve with the Federation Science Council from her graduate adviser that Keir had been close to. She decided to take the opportunity to try out something new, and to work with people she new she really liked. It was an interesting two years, and through it she found out that she liked diplomacy more than she had as a child.

That assignment led right back into the world she had been born into- diplomacy. For the next few years she was assigned as a Scientific Attache to various Ambassadors, moving from one place to another. This posting had the added benefit of allowing her to spend time with her old friend from Starbase Orion, Chris Blake, who was also serving with the Diplomatic Corps. That friendship turned into a relationship, and they recently married.

In 2389 she was offered the posting of Chief of Science on Starbase 12 and she accepted, citing a chance to settle down and start her family with her husband who had been asking her for months to consider it. Now he was happy that she accepted and the two are now planning their family.
