| Personal History | Gunthar Werner was born on Leuthen V, a backwater agriculture world. He was a gifted athlete and there was even talk of Werner joining professional sports. He was also getting into a lot of trouble. He didn't respect authority and got into many brawls. When he was old enough he joined the Star Fleet Marines to leave the planet. Werner did conform to Marine life. At least for a short while. Onboard ship he was alright. On shore leave he would get drunk and fight. It was to the point where he wasn't allowed off his ship. Then the Dominion War broke out. Werner and his outfit, the 8th Marine Infantry Regiment (Eight Ball) were deployed for war. The 8th Marines took part in the planetary assault on Cardassia Prime. Corporal Werner distinguished himself for his leadership and courage. Sergeant Werner was reassigned to the USS Anzio. During his time aboard the Anzio, the marine detachment fought in a few firefights with Gorn warriors. Werner was again received medals for bravery and skill. Staff Sergeant Werner was reassigned to the 44th Marine Infantry Regiment (Red Dogs) on Mars. Uneventful until a large Borg force entered the Federation. The 44th Marines were tasked with assaulting a Borg stronghold on Igaro V. The 44th took heavy casualties during the initial assault. Werner was an acting platoon leader. 2nd Lieutenant Johaan Piterzoon, a platoon leader from another platoon in Werner's company, was acting company commander. After the assault, the Borg counter attacked. The attack was repelled but the company took more casualties. Werner told Piterzoon that they company should pull back a little and consolidate their positions. Piterzoon told him no and ordered Werner and what was left of his platoon to counter attack. Werner refused the order. A counter attack with just an under strength platoon would be suicide. Especially as Piterzoon and the rest of the company would stay out of the fight. Piterzoon lowered his weapon at Werner and repeated his order this time threatening to shot him. Werner reacted by shooting Piterzoon first. Werner then took control of the company. Staff Sergeant Cole Devon, Piterzoon's platoon sergeant and now acting platoon leader, protested Werner's actions. Werner just ignored him. He ordered a fall back and then the company dug-in. Another Borg assault was repelled. After the 44th was relieved Star Fleet Marines launched an investigation. All the marines but one that survived confirmed Werner's version of events. The one was Devon. Devon claimed that Werner was a coward and wanted to retreat. The investigation team ignored Devon's version of events and cleared Werner. The event would have ended there had not Piterzoon's father been a powerful member in the Federation's chancellery. He wanted to clear his son's name. He found a some Star Fleet officers and convinced them to reopen the investigation. The senior Piterzoon hand picked the team. This new team ignored all version's of events except for Devon's. During the court martial only Devon's version of what happened was allowed into evidence. The trail was quick. Werner was found guilty on all counts and sent to Jaros II. |
