Personality & Traits
General Overview | Born on the Martian Colonies to civilian scientists, Jonathan Holliday was brought up expected to enter the scientific community as his parents had done before him. His decision to enter Starfleet instead of remaining within an academic setting created a rift between Jonathan and his father, which for many years has led to extensive division within the family, with a minimal of contact between the two. Specialising in tactical training during his Academy days, partly to try and distance himself from his father's academic background as far as possible, John graduated in the top five of his class, with a reputation for tactical ingenuity, albeit with a headstrong, impulsive attitude that got him into difficulty more than once. Fiercely loyal to the chain of command, he follows orders to the letter as long as he agrees with them, and is not afraid to voice his opinions to junior and senior officers alike should the situation arise. His personality is that of a born soldier, always willing to step into the breach to defend friend or ally alike, without thought for the danger to oneself. Straight talking, Jonathan refuses to allow his words to hide his meaning, and is always on hand with a thought of his own. Jon also now has a more democratic form of command as he has seen the end result of what an authoritarian by the book Admiral can do when things go wrong, people can still die. The Bonhomme Richard incident has shaken loose much of his preconceived notions of what it means to be in command and how to command. |
|
Strengths & Weaknesses | Strengths: Tactical and combative training has given him an edge over many of his classmates. Skilled in both ship-to-ship and personal combat, John finds himself most at ease with a phaser in close proximity. Due to his parents overbearing nature, he has developed a knowledge of microbiology and xenobiology, although nowhere near the level that his parents would have preferred. Always the first to head into a difficult or potentially dangerous situation, John has a habit of finding a way through what would seem to be an impossible situation. Weaknesses: His strengths are unfortunately also his weakness. With a headstrong and seemingly arrogant attitude, John has found himself in situations more than once where he has been unable to contain all the variables, which sometimes has led to further complications. Although well versed in tactical and engineering disciplines, his scientific knowledge beyond his Academy training and the xenobiology and microbiology that his father insisted he learn is not as developed as others on board the various ships he has been assigned to. |
|
Ambitions | Given his choice, John would most happily serve on the Federation front lines, within a military setting, or at least on a more battle-hardened vessel, so far with no relationships to tie him down. | |
Hobbies & Interests | Martial arts - Kendo and Kenpo Maintaining physical fitness Ancient Earth cultures Vernacular: Speaking in a very specific tone, John is unlikely to be found holding back his opinions on a matter, or mincing his words. What you hear is what you get. Orientation: Heterosexual Language(s) Spoken Federation Standard, Klingon, Andorian, some Vulcan |
Personal History | Born in 2355 in the Martian Colonies, to distinguished xenobiologist Robert and his wife Claire, herself a particle physicist, John was brought up as their only child and therefore expected to carry on the hopes and ambitions of his rather overbearing parents. Finding himself caught between his own desires, and that of his family, a rift opened up on his 18th birthday when John decided that his preferred path through life would be that of Starfleet. Even without the support of his parents, namely his father, who actively disowned him after his son's "betrayal", the young man sought solitude and comfort from his instructors and the training they could give him. Believing the stars to hold the future of mankind, he decided to distance himself from his father's reputation as a scientist and preferred to find his answers at the end of a phaser, rather than the end of a microscope or a tricorder. With one younger sibling whom he doesn't get along with, John found himself to be very much alone, his early months on Earth being particularly difficult. Having spent his entire youth in the relatively underpopulated Martian colonies, he found it rather unnerving to be surrounded by so many people at the same time, even within the familiar confines of the Academy campus, something which he still struggles with today, preferring his own company, to that of his fellow officers. Accepted into the Academy in 2373, John found himself in a situation completely alien to the one he had grown up in. Immersing himself in his studies, partly fuelled by a desire to distance himself from his father, and also by a fear of the unknown, especially with the increased diversity of species and creeds in the Academy, John decided to spend as much time as possible working to become what he saw as the "perfect" Starfleet history. Specializing in Tactical and Combat training, John impressed his instructors with his "get stuck in" attitude, completing courses such as Advanced Hand-To-Hand Training, Advanced Starship Combat, and Survival Training only helped to increase this knowledge. Taking some time to explore other options, he also studied Engineering, specifically Warp Theory, as well as other required elements within the program that has given him a suitably detailed understanding of starship operations. Finding topics such as Negotiation and Diplomacy to not attract his attention as much as some other areas, there are certain skills he has yet to develop even further into his career. Graduating in 2377, he found himself immersed in a Starfleet still reeling from the Dominion Wars. Given the rank of Ensign, he was assigned to the Defiant-class USS Damacles, sent to the Gamma Quadrant to help monitor the Dominion withdrawal back to their own territory. This is where his first combat experiences arose. Ambushed by several Jem'Hadar vessels, not content with the Federation Victory, the small Defiant class found itself overwhelmed and quickly boarded. As a security officer, the young Ensign Holliday was assigned, along with three others, to clear a path from the Bridge to the escape pods for the senior staff, and found himself phaser-to-phaser with the feared Jem'Hadar. Seeing a senior official in danger, the Ensign decided to tackle a soldier in hand-to-hand combat, relinquishing his phaser to a colleague in a brash attempt to prove himself in front of his superiors... This was soon to prove a serious mistake. Untrained in comparison to a veteran soldier, the Ensign found himself heavily beaten and wounded, unable to withstand the assault of his opponent. Had another officer not seen his situation and intervened with a timely phaser blast, the outcome could have been far worse. This incident greatly embarrassed John, and the scar to his face he earned that day reminds him of the petulance of youth and the mistakes of his past. With the loss of the USS Damacles, but the successful escape of the majority of the crew, John found himself promoted to Lieutenant (JG) by his CO in recognition of his bravery in the face of the enemy, something which he personally disagreed with, and was reassigned to the Excelsior class USS Hera as a junior Tactical Officer, working mainly on the night shift. An uneventful period of two years passed before he was again promoted to a full Lieutenant. During 2381, Holliday was reassigned to Starbase 47 where he worked as a Weapons Specialist during the refit of many Starfleet vessels, after the realization that the Dominion War had left much of the fleet in ruins, and those remaining were still insufficiently equipped to defend the Federation borders should a situation develop. With the completion of the refit program, the Lieutenant was recalled to Earth, against his repeated requests to serve at the Academy, acting as an instructor in Starship Combat as the Federation continued to rebuild it's strength, earning himself a promotion to Lieutenant Commander in order to qualify for Instructor Status. After an altercation and rather heated argument with the Academy Commander, Holliday found himself out of favor with the authorities on Earth and was speedily reassigned to the USS New Orleans, an Intrepid-class starship assigned to the edge of the Beta Quadrant to monitor the Romulan Star Empire serving as Chief Tactical Officer. This was a posting that would see one of the most dramatic changes in the Galaxy - the destruction of Romulus. Ordered to join the Federation relief effort, partly out of humanitarian concern, and also out of fear of what would happen with a destabilized Romulan empire and its attached military, the USS New Orleans spent the next two years working within the Romulan Empire as the remains of their civilization attempted to rebuild. Finding himself bored with the repetitive nature of this mission, he quickly requested a reassignment, something which his CO at the time was more than willing to accept after having two years of almost constant disagreement with his CTO. Returning to Earth as ordered, Holliday was hoping to come across a warship, a Galaxy class, or a Sovereign, but instead was assigned to the USS Galileo, a science vessel, something which John puts down to his disagreement with his superiors during his Academy tenure, a sort of practical joke, with the military man being assigned from a mission of peace to a mission of knowledge. Whilst Galileo was away from the front lines as far as action was concerned, Holliday found himself extremely comfortable aboard ship, and has since learned to live with the fact that although he isn't a soldier, he still has a duty to his crew. During a mission that concluded with the First Contact with the Lek't, John found himself assimilated by the Borg. Outfitted with their technology, the former Commander was pressed into service as a voice for the drones under the command of the mysterious Lek't species and oversaw the assimilation of several of his former crewmates. Thanks to a daring rescue mission by the Galileo, Jonathan found himself returned to more friendly surroundings where he underwent de-assimilation. Whilst the majority of his implants have been removed, some elements of their technology remain unremoveable and he has been left temporarily weakened pending a full recovery. Upon returning to Earth in 2390 after concluding repairs with the assistance of the Lek't, John found himself promoted to the rank of Captain and assigned as the new Commanding Officer of the Galileo following the promotion of his former CO to the rank of Commodore and assignment as Mission Adviser. Jonathan spent the majority of the next year in command of the Galileo, overseeing her mission to take part in the NIMBUS wargames between the Klingon Empire and Starfleet. He was also in command for the duration of Galileo's time in the Mirror Universe and their eventual escape from his mirror equivalent. Successfully returning to the Prime Universe, Galileo was ordered back to Jupiter station for repair and rearmament where Holliday was demoted to his former role as First Officer albeit still with the rank of Captain whilst now-Admiral Saalm retook her position as Commanding Officer. Holliday decided that enough was enough and he stuck his name in quietly for reassignment and this time his achievements were enough to garner for him, an assignment that was worthy of him. Command of the newly built and commissioned Vikrant class carrier, the USS Bonhomme Richard This was where the good news ended as he had to put up with being saddled with an Admiral from Starfleet Research and Development Division. Division Admiral K'Temoc Bremer. Jonathan Holiday got to see all the worst aspects of his personality given form and it nearly destroyed him, as K'Temoc relieved him of duty and then assumed command of the carrier and nearly got it destroyed. Jonathan was forced to break every rule in the book to save his command and crew. Since then he has remained in command of his ship as he was judged as not being responsible for what happened that day and his actions earned him a great deal of respect from his crew and from the crews of many of the other ships present. Holiday decided that he needed to change his approach to life in general and his people in particular, his efforts in opening up to his crew are slowly bearing fruit. Medical History: With no existing medical conditions, Holliday's body shows signs of combat from his experiences with the Jem'Hadar during his early career, several bones show repairs being carried out, and the visible scar on his left cheek measuring 3.2cm serves as a constant reminder to him. His assimilation by the Borg in 2389 and subsequent return to individuality has left several marks on his body, namely in the form of implants that for various reasons cannot be removed. These include but are not limited to assimilation tubules, several nodes in his brain, these are inactive yet stable and small adaptations to his endocrine system. A small number of nanoprobes, that are also inactive remain in his bloodstream. It has been recommended that Jonathan undergo psychological counseling to assess the degree of the trauma he may have experienced, however as of yet there has been no such discussions with Holliday himself as he felt he was not in need of therapy. This was something that Holiday decided he needed to change as he was informed that he could not have this on his record if he wished to be promoted or even if he wished to keep his command, so he acceded to the fact that he needed to see the counselor. |
