Personal History | Heather Skyler was born on Madrigal Colony in 2365 and her early life was rather uneventful but it was in twenty three seventy four where her life went down the drain, so to speak. Skyler has spent a good chunk of her life on the relative safety of a badly damaged federation vessel. USS Stormrage, a Ambassador Class ship that went missing during the middle of the Dominion War, she had been fitted with an experimental test drive and it was this that had gone so badly. While most Special Forces operators are recruited from active field duty, Skyler is an exception. Skyler’s enlistment in Starfleet SOCOM comes after receiving stellar combat scores in training exercises despite minimal field experience. Skyler was three years old when her parents divorced. Her mother, whose star was on the rise in Navy signals intelligence, had received a promotion to captain and was reassigned to Starbase One in Earth orbit. During the trip to Earth, their ship’s warp drive failed, catastrophically. A six-day trip turned into a six-year long odyssey as the communication system was fired and most of the ship was several damaged. They could pick things up but not send any messages. Rather then fight to repair his ship or use his last remaining support craft to call for help, Captain Brian Bremer took his crew on a six year odyssey that didn't need to happen, he was court marshaled when they got to Earth and discharged from Starfleet on ground of mental instability and incompetence. As the Stormrage limped toward sector zero zero one, dodging Dominion and Cardassian activity along the way. Over the ensuing months then years, Skyler taught herself to understand the Dominion's as well as those of the Cardassians and some of the Breen's languages by listening to the recordings and comparing them to computer translations, in some cases correcting inaccuracies or improving existing translations. Skyler followed in her mother’s footsteps and joined Starfleet, her test scores led to her being recruited by Starfleet Intelligence specializing in signals intelligence. Skyler soon found herself immersed in the quagmire of post-war diplomacy as an Starfleet Intelligence Special Liaison to the Federation’s negotiations with various factions after the war, it meant that she was stuck in meetings with Federation, Cardassian and Breen officials for months. While her fluency in the Cardassian language and knowledge of their society was highly valued by her superiors, in practice it meant endless meetings with Cardassians, a species she already hated. She was asked to come and assist with a rather specific mission, to recover an abandoned Jem'Hadar Dreadnought. The operation was so sensitive that few outside the immediate circle of the heads of Starfleet Intelligence and Starfleet Security are even aware of its existence to this day. Even so, the communication skills and combat prowess Skyler displayed throughout did not go unnoticed by Starfleet Intelligence's upper echelons. The Marines also took note of this woman's skills and so the marines beat intelligence to the punch, as they offered her a recruitment package. After her experience at the Jem'Hadar dreadnought, Skyler found it nearly impossible to return to her former routine. Looking for more, she entered the Starfleet War Games, an inter-service event for personnel to practice on combat decks similar to those used for training by SOCOM. Though her combat training was minimal compared to most competitors, she placed in the top five percent through a combination of innate physical talent and quick thinking. As a result of this performance, and recommendations from the highest levels of Starfleet Intelligence, Skyler was approached by a Marine officer seeking to cultivate warriors highly attuned to the complexities of a post-war threat environment. Skyler showed time and again she was more than capable and thus she was assigned to the USS Thunderer as one of their junior officers for training, she was a highly unusual case but she impressed everyone with her skills and abilities. She was posted to the USS Avalon to command their marine detachment, mostly to protect it from anyone who would board the vessel, today she remains aboard USS Avalon and she'll remain here for the foreseeable future, enjoying this assignment and training her marines. |
