| Personal History | Montgomery was notorious for his lack of tact and diplomacy. Even his "patron" the Commander of Starfleet Forces, Beta Quadrant. Fleet Admiral April Yamaguchi frequently mentions it in her reports: "he is liable to commit untold errors in lack of tact" and "I had to haul him over the coals for his usual lack of tact and egotistical outlook which prevented him from appreciating other people's feelings". One incident that illustrated this occurred during the final days of the Dominion War, when Montgomery bet an Admiral named Walter Bedell Smith that he could capture a Dominion Base by the middle of April 2375. Smith jokingly replied that if Montgomery could do it he would give him a Defiant class starship complete with crew. Smith promptly forgot all about it, but Montgomery did not, and when Sfax was taken on 4th of April he sent a message to Smith "claiming his winnings". Smith tried to laugh it off, but Montgomery was having none of it and insisted on his Starship. It got as high as Valerie Umstead, at that time she was commander of the Seventh Fleet who was said to be absolutely furious, but with her renowned skill in diplomacy she ensured Montgomery did get his Defiant Class starship, though at a great cost in ill feeling. Even April Yamaguchi thought it "crass stupidity". As noted in her log two weeks later as she had been commanding the Defiant class ship in question. Bernard James Montgomery was born on the 17th of November, 2327 in London, England on the planet of Earth. He grew up in an old school British household where loyalty and family were developed further. When Montgomery was aged eighteen he went off not to Starfleet but to Kings College in Cambridge to further his education, here he spent two years learning about Tactical and earning a bachelors degree in military history and a second one in military tactics. When he had this in hand, he went into Starfleet by joining the academy at age twenty, in 2347 and as he spent the next four years at the academy, he showed an aptitude for weapons and tactics, much like his namesake of three hundred years ago. Montgomery had hard choices which for him were easy to make. Also he preferred security and tactical which made his ultimate career choice easy. When Montgomery graduated the academy, he was offered the chance to go to the command school which was also located on Earth, he accepted without considering it which surprised a lot of people as most tended to want time to consider their options. Where as Montgomery considered it no choice at all. The course was two years long and Montgomery got a promotion in the middle of the classwork, he had intended to graduate with honors. This was something he also accomplished. Montgomery's first assignment in Starfleet was to the USS Magellan, which was an older Constellation class ship on her last tour before she was to be decommissioned and scrapped, citing age related concerns which had appeared in her and several of the others which were quietly removed from service and scrapped. Montgomery served four years here, earning his stripes and a promotion to Lieutenant Commander before being reassigned to the USS Exactor, an older Excelsior class starship and it would be here where he would work his way up to Captain and the command of her. Montgomery remained assigned to the USS Exactor for just over sixteen years, it was also here where he met his wife who was working as one of the ships bartenders. The two stuck up an odd relationship which over time blossomed into a full blown romance, two years after they met, they were married and within five years they had two sons together. in 2374 the USS Exactor was severally damaged in battle against the Borg and finally the old ships luck had run out as one Borg High yield plasma torpedo obliterated her port nacelle and severally damaged the rest of the engineering hull. With destruction staring the crew in the face. Montgomery ordered his crew to abandon ship while he would remain behind. His Exec was able to talk him out of it citing the fact that guys like Montgomery would be needed to fight the war against the Dominion so Montgomery relented and followed his Exec to the escape pods. Montgomery watched as his home was all but demolished a few minutes later by a second spread of plasma torpedoes after the ship automatically opened fire on the cube. Montgomery was reassigned to command an Akira class vessel, the USS Dawn of Retribution. He already had a reputation for bringing his crews home alive and thus he continued to do just that while he alongside many millions of others fought the Dominion in the two year long skirmish which came to be called 'The Dominion War.' Montgomery retained his command all through the war and the next fifteen years after that. Thought he remainder of the seventies and the eighties but it was in twenty three ninety one when he was offered the chance to shake down one of the first of the new Century class ships, he naturally jumped at the chance to do so. He had his Exec promoted to command the Dawn of Retribution and off he went. |
