Mission:
Mission 98: Building Our New Home
Location: Various Locations - Starbase Vanguard
Timeline: 1100Hrs - June 24th, 2393
Kameron Solusar-Yamaguchi sat back in his chair, as he brushed his hair out of his face while he let out a sigh. For him, science had always been a second love as he had greatly enjoyed flying and the thrill of the same, now he was tied to a desk and earthbound, or rather starbase-bound, gravity was always the same no matter where anyone went, be it at the top of any mountain crag or the rim of a black hole. To Solusar-Yamaguchi, all that mattered was the constant of gravity, it was the main reminder that there was order to the insanity he called his life.
Solusar-Yamaguchi turned his attention back to the PADD in his hand as he tapped the display ever so gently, with the index finger of his left hand, as a movie began to play, it was a three dimensional model of the Utgarde star at the center of the star system where the base itself was presently located. The steller evolution presently showcased that this star was much like Sol, it would remain in the main sequence for the next several billion years before collapsing under gravity's weight and then it would turn into a red giant. Another two billion years would pass as what remained of the system was barbequed into oblivion before the star died a second time, it would attempt to fuse helium into oxygen and argon but it would fail due to lack of mass before it became a white dwarf and slowly fade away and become a black dwarf.
Just then as the movie ended. Solusar-Yamaguchi grinned as he tapped 'save' as the door opened and an older looking female stuck her head into his office. "Hey skipper, the Commander is looking for you."
"Hey Courtney, come on in and take a seat. I won't bite." Solusar-Yamaguchi commented at the older female before him.
"I bet you say that to your wife, all the time" Courtney answered, a gentle smile on her lips.
"Well, with Elizabeth I have no need to be gentle or subtle," Solusar-Yamaguchi answered, a smile on his lips. "What can I do for you Courtney?"
"The Commander is looking for you," Courtney responded with a cheery smile. "He was asking about the Utgarde model, he wanted to know if it was finished yet?"
"Well, I have it right here and yes it's finished." Solusar-Yamaguchi picked up the PADD in question before he rose to his feet. "I'll go and see if I can track him down, though he's probably in his office, wanting a cup of coffee before he sets off on his hunt for me. Though why he can't call me in, is a mystery."
"I didn't ask, he didn't say," Courtney answered a smile on her lips, so clearly whatever it was, was not bad news.
Solusar-Yamaguchi shrugged, it was unimportant. "Alright. I'll go and find him." and with that, Solusar-Yamaguchi departed his office in silence leaving Courtney alone as she sat down across from Solusar-Yamaguchi's desk to get on with the paperwork he needed to complete. Courtney's job was to handle whatever needed handling as the department was still short on a few people so she filled in where needed.
Meanwhile, Solusar-Yamaguchi tapped the long wall panel that ran down the length of the entire hallway. "Computer: locate Commander Fardreamer?"
The Answer was prompt and quick. "Commander Fardreamer is presently located in his office."
"Okay, thank you," Solusar-Yamaguchi answered in a quiet tone of voice before he set off for his destination. He reached the destination a few minutes later as he tapped the door chime.
"Enter?" came the response from within.
Solusar-Yamaguchi tapped the door release, he moved into Fardreamer's office a moment later. "You wanted to see me Commander." it was not a question and it was not phrased as such.
"Yeah I did," Fardreamer answered with a nod. "Hows the Utgarde model coming along?" he inquired.
"It's done." Solusar-Yamaguchi handed Fardreamer the PADD. "Here you go."
"Nice." Fardreamer smiled as he settled in to watch the work that Solusar-Yamaguchi had done. "Fine work Kam. Nice work with this."
"Thank you." Solusar-Yamaguchi was wondering why he had been summoned and it was showing.
"Well, Kam. You are no doubt wondering why you are here." Fardreamer commented evenly. "Well, I had faith in you, your leadership abilities and your various skills and you have proven your worth to this department time and time again, so I am promoting you to the rank of Lieutenant Commander."
Solusar-Yamaguchi blinked, he had not seen this coming. "Um... Thank you," he responded as Fardreamer opened a small black box that housed a rank pip, this one was a black one with a ringed line of gold before he smiled as he gently pinned the younger man before him. "Congratulations Kam," he responded before the two men shook hands. "You earned this."
"Thank you, Commander." Solusar-Yamaguchi smiled at the other man.
"Your work has been sensational, I expect it to continue." Fardreamer knew he did not need to say it as the younger man before him had proven himself time and again, he had showcased his skills several times. "How are things elsewhere?" Fardreamer inquired.
"Yessir. I do have several items to work on. I'm still working on the project in charting the weather patterns of Utgarde Six, the Gas Giant has a top layer of thick cloud which we're having issues with penetrating. But, I have a plan to bypass it." he added.
"What did you have in mind?"
"We have two Defiant-class ships in various stages of construction. I'd like to stick in a request for one of them, refit it for a science role, lessen the weapons somewhat and see if I can't add some more sensors and science systems." Solusar-Yamaguchi paused. "I will need help from several others to make this idea of mine, work... But I can do it."
"Just like that?" Fardreamer commented. "A lot of work to penetrate the atmosphere of one world." he knew this would be interesting but he liked the idea.
"I can find other uses for the ship too," Solusar-Yamaguchi answered. "Long-distance early warning, covert observation of a specific area and the ability to monitor events in areas where other Federation ships either can't go or the area in question is downright dangerous to be in."
Fardreamer paused before he nodded. "I'll stick in a request for her. In the meantime, draw up your specs as I really want to see what you have in mind," he explained. "Kam, you seem to have ideas and talents outside of science so I am going to stick you to work on building this science variant of the Defiant-class. I want you to proceed with your idea, I want a full set of blueprints, technical specs and the like whenever you can finish it, but do not rush on it. Take your time and do this right, you are free to use whatever methods and whenever time you deem fit."
"Yessir. I'll add it to my list of work to do." Solusar-Yamaguchi nodded his head.
Fardreamer smiled as he nodded back, he knew the younger man would not let it go to his head. "Dismissed."
Solusar-Yamaguchi turned and departed the office in silence.
