Mission:
Mission 61: The Blood-Dimmed Tide
Location: Zh'kuar system
Timeline: Feb 11th 2392
Arina Maya patiently watched from her tactical display observing as the cloak forces began wrapping up their work mining and placing Jammer satellites throughout the system while her cruisers held back at the edge of the system, well out of Tekevek's fleet detection range.
Commander Luhanna Wintersnow smiled as she watched the sensor display before her. "So... today we come to it at last.. the great battle of our time.." she commented. "Its like the sprinkling of small stones the starts an avalanche." as she went over to her Chief Engineer. "Are the toys ready?"
"Yessir.. They are ready for deployment as soon as you gave the word." the man responded with a smile.
Wintersnow grinned. "Then please.. Lay the toys for our friends to avoid.." she turned. "Send a small message, tell them. 'the last bread basket is being placed.'" the exotic looking woman went and sat down in her chair.
"Willdo skipper." Lt Commander Jordal Hunt smiled as he went to work on the message while the USS Dusk began deploying her mines, two at a time every few seconds while she finished deploying the last minefield. About twenty minutes later the Dusk dropped her last two mines before the conn officer began moving the ship away from the area. "Captain,. mines deployed.
Luhanna meanwhile gently rubbed her left horn with her slender fingers. "Alright, inform the guys that the minefields in this area are finished..."
Hunt regarded her, before he smiled. "Message sent." as he tapped one button on the display.
Arina got the message and promptly commanded her cruisers to move forward. This would be the first direct engagement between Akurian and klingon vessels and she wasn't sure exactly what would happen. however she figured she had the tactical advantage. The base had two negh'vars, four Vor'Cha's, a Dozen ktinga's and over fifty birds of prey. However the where not in a high state of readiness when the minefield was activates and Arina first had her cruisers fire a full missile volley at the base. However the range was quite long, nearly 5 million kilometers, so her missiles would have a long flight time of almost 8 minutes. She had no intention of allowing the base to fight back.
It took 45 seconds for the SSCV 250 missiles to carge, so by the time the first volley of missiles arrived at their target Arina's cruisers had thrown a full nine volleys at their target. With the ships she had, it was 440 missiles per volley. The base became aware of its impending doom only a minute before the first missiles arrived, barely managing to bring up its shields in time. Defensive weapons fire was sporadic at first however the stations shields where stronger than Arina anticipated, holding through the first, second, and third volleys. However the fourth volley finished the stations shields and the fifth and sixth volleys crippled the target.
By this point the Klingon warships themselves got their defenses up and running and the remaining three volleys then hit the klingon warships, crpippling a negh'var, and destroying two Vor'cha's, five K'tinga's, and twenty four birds of prey. Having expended fully half her missile ordinance Arina resolved to conserve her remaining missiles and finish off the klingons in a gunnery duel. Once her cruisers got into effective lance gun range, they opened fire. With the klingons primarily using directed energy weapons they still had shorter effective range than the guided projectiles fired by the Akurian lance guns. However this didn't dissuade the klingons in the slightest and they immediately charged the Akurian vessels.
The Klingons first opened fire with their torpedo weapons however they where predominantly older model torpedoes with few countermeasures so the cruisers defensive weapons easily shot down the weapons, however the klingons reckless expenditure of torpedo ordinance did have one effect, it kept the Akurian dual purpose guns focused on shooting down the torpedoes rather than firing at the Klingon weapons, thus reducing the amount of lance fire Directed at the Klingon ships themselves. However Akurian main battery gunfire still succeeded in crippling or destroying the remaining Negh'var, the Vorcha's and the K'tinga's, leaving the Klingon's with just birds of prey.
All the remaining birds of prey concentrated their fire on the light cruiser Wings of Yinor. By this point however the Akurian dual purpose guns stopped shooting down ordinance and fired at the birds of prey directly, with devastating effect. Most of the birds of prey died within a matter of minutes, however they did succeed in downing the light cruisers shields, however their weapons lacked sufficient punch to make it through the cruisers armor. A few birds of prey attempted to run when they saw the fight go poorly however Arina intended to leave no witnesses and destroyed every last bird of prey present. Two birds of prey attempted to ram, which Wings of Yinor narrowly managed to avoid, thanks to her captain being on his toes.
Inev commented," Well, that was one sided, these Klingon ships really aren't very though."
Arina took a more cautious opinion," These where second line units and we caught them by surprise, I don't expect future engagements with the klingons to be so decisively in our favor. Nor do i expect the Ground war to be as easy."
She then sent out the order," Arina to all ships, you may begin deploying your ground troops."
The Akurian Assault carrier carrying 2-14th combat brigade approached the planet from the opposite side and began deploying its shuttles and landing craft.
Kralash looked to Ktala. "Prepare to land." Ktala acknowledged her. Kralasha then hit the comm, "K'taro, we are preparing to land. Are the marines ready?"
"Yes, Captain." K'taro replied. He was in the hold with the marines waiting for the Hurgh maS to make planetfall. He held onto his ghIntaq and kept his Mek'leth on his belt.
Meanwhile on the USS Dusk. Lt Commander Luhanna Wintersnow watched in silence as the orbital battle progressed. "The Akurians know its going to get stupid right?"
Hunt turned. "I'm not sure they are too worried about it skipper." he responded.
Wintersnow smiled. "Yeah... That sounds about right.." she turned. "Hows the minefield coming along?"
"We're almost done sir."
"Oh nice.. This almost runs itself." she commented with a chuckle. "Still.. Lets not let our guard down too much." as she turned her attention back to the battle happening planetside.
First actions of the Akurian forces was suppressing air defenses. Once the Akurian aircraft carriers entered atmosphere they then deployed their complement of drone aircraft, which led the formation of shuttles and lander's.
