Making Swords

Posted on Wed Mar 18th, 2020 @ 3:04pm by Division Admiral Celeste Yamaguchi-Hobbs

Mission: Mission 98: Building Our New Home
Location: The Forge - Starbase Vanguard
Timeline: 1900Hrs - June 24th, 2393

Captain Celeste Yamaguchi smiled as she finished smashing her hammer into the plate of metal that she was preparing for the oven, this would end up being a sword for her brother who took the time to teach her how to make weapons, she had come to love the feeling of metal-cutting whereas once upon a time as she hated it as it terrified her. Now, however, she often had the aroma of burnt metal around her.

Yamaguchi smashed her hammer into the metal as she decided that it was now flat enough, she selected a pair of tongs before picking it up with her right hand, she then turned as she opened the oven with her left then she slid the sword into the oven where it would remain being heat treated for about six hours.

She went over to her other project where the two short swords were presently sitting, she had to do everything by herself, which was metalworking, blacksmithing, sculptor and everything else. Her two adopted children helped and assisted as best they could, Pava did more artwork and design which she then passed over to her mother and brother to make. Celeste, however, took longer than the average Smith to make weapons as she would not compromise on quality. She was also a full-time medical officer and a full-time mother to boot, however, she missed Pava and Pasha and she would carry on without them.

She found herself regarding the two God of War blades that she had finished making, now it was time to treat them with chemicals to give it the well-used look as these weapons were not designed to be pretty, also these two weapons had taken a month for her to make from supplies that Celeste had obtained from the replicator, sometimes she would go onto Starbases for metal that she would use like sheets of 10/20 Damascus steel or Chromoly steel. Sometimes she used Spanish Steel but other times she would mix and match with various types of steel from various planets.

Sometimes her results spoke for themselves and she passed the information on to her brother who was a Master Smith and other times it would fall apart in her face, presently the weapon's she was making was turning out quite well.

The hilts, pommels, and casts were cut out and then over the last few weeks the weapons had come together after Celeste had deliberately lightened them otherwise they would have been far too heavy for anyone other than a Gorn or a Vrykul to wield. She also had early on decided to use Chromoly steel, its stronger but lighter as her next step was to get a piece of starship armor which sadly, wasn't available in her price range.

She had gone out of her way to make these as light as she could and now she was going to finish them off by distressing the blades and hilts with a highly corrosive chemical to give it a patina look, it was meant to give it a tarnished look and feel rather than polished and brand new.

She doffed her heat gloves and then she selected a mask and rubber gloves before she went to work, she also turned the ventilation up to maximum so she wouldn't need to worry about the fumes collecting as she worked.

Yamaguchi poured some of this chemical into a bowel before she began brushing it over the blades as the luster began to fade but she continued to brush as if she was painting a canvas, the thing she liked about this chemical as it was highly dangerous to use anywhere near an open flame.

This was why Celeste stored her chemicals in a blast-proof container on the quietest side of her forge, away from the ovens and the like, one did not ever mess with cuprous chloride/hydrochloric acid, it would dissolve the victim alive, it would also be a most gruesome death.

"Yeah. That's why you respect the shit in here... Because if you don't...It'll kill you." Celeste Yamaguchi said aloud, as she took a moment to run her wrist over her forehead to wipe away the sheen of perspiration that had appeared there, as she smiled under her mask to keep out the lethal fumes.

Once she was finished, she placed the remains of the liquid into the replicator and recycled it, she did not ever take chances with safety, hers or anyone else's, also the replicator was an armored version which she had to call in a couple of favors to obtain one for her personal use, once she was finished, she stepped back to admire her work as the patina finished its work.

Celeste produced her tricorder which she had designed specifically for the Forge, she did a quick scan of the weapons that she had built. Now they were ready for shipment and delivery so she picked up both weapons, she let out a grunt when she realized that they were still quite heavy despite being as light as she could make them.

She went over to the master control computer which looked after the forge in her absence, it was designed as a security system and as a monitoring system as she quickly activated it then she proceeded to tell Jarvis also known as 'Just A Rather Very Intelligent System, or J.A.R.V.I.S for short. T'Rae was apparently a Marvel fan when she designed the system to protect her forge.

Jarvis could display on a wall monitor or appear as a hologram. Celeste didn't mind either way as today he presented himself as a hologram.

"Everything else is finished. I have one sword in the oven, it's being heat treated for the next six hours." Yamaguchi explained as she hefted the twp weapons, complete with scabbards, designed by Pava and built by the replicator as Pasha's hand was not available for this work.

Jarvis nodded his holographic head at her. "I understand sir. It will be done."

"Thank you." and with that Yamaguchi went over to the exit, then she tapped the door release to let her out when she reset the system after the door closed behind her and then off she went to see her customer, with her new blades in her hands.
