| Personal History | Born on April 20th, 2354 to Rosella and Dorin Torel, Aiden is the youngest of three children in a rather close-knit and supportive family structure. He grew up, having what could be described as an 'average' life on I'stosa colony, until his parents moved them in 2370 to the Alpha Quadrant, part of the first wave of Stagnorian colonists to the area of the Quadrant, the last in the galaxy left completely unexplored. He was 16, and had been preparing for entry into University to study Physics when the decision was made. His parents were something of professional colonists, and as a result he spent the next three years learning by practice, rather than formally, survival techniques, architecture, geology, and various technological procedures associated with colonization, such as climate adaptation, water purification, waste extraction, and power generation. In 2373 the Dominion War began, and Starfleet, desperate for man-power, was forced into a war it wasn't fully prepared for. It was 3 years after the move to the Alpha Quadrant, and in that time the Confederation of Allied Worlds, lead by Stagnorians, came to have a warm friendship with the Federation. As a result, although the official stance was one of neutrality, many individual Stagnorians formed volunteer units, collectively known as the Stagnorian Volunteer Group, or SVG. It was never extremely large, at it's height culminating in a regiment, and had no standardization to speak of. As it was a volunteer group, and simultaneously not supported by it's people or the Federation (usually), battlefield attrition inevitably lead to the use of captured Cardassian, Dominion, and Breen technologies, or reconditioned or otherwise acquired Klingon, Romulan, or Federation systems. As a member of the Combat Engineer company, Aiden learned a great deal about the various technologies employed by every side. The exposure to various technologies lead to a subsequent 'pick-up' of the basics of several different languages. The nature of the unit meant that there was little in the way of regimentation or formal command and control, and thus every soldier was pretty much left to his own devices in most respects. Unit cohesion was strong as each person counted on others in order to lighten the load, and trial by error eventually translated into excellence in battle. The SVG become recognized as an honored unit, racking several victories against Dominion forces and acting in support of the Alliance's war efforts. It was during his time in the SVG that Aiden met and fell for a woman, his first love. She was simultaneously the most exhilirating, passionate, irritating, and stubborn person he'd ever met, and their relationship vascilated between moments of incredile tenderness and almost hatred for each other. Underlying everything however was a deep connection, one that is impossible for him to explain to this day. They lost contact with each other when she was transferred from her position in an adjacent unit. Neither had really expressed their feelings towards the other clearly... the only regret he truly has to this day. Aiden would continue to serve as a Combat Engineer and Sapper with the SVG until the war's end in 2375. With that, the SVG was disbanded, and Aiden would return to his original plan of completing his education. He left for the Pa'sen Colony in the Beta Quadrant, where he attended Pa'sen University. Instead of following his normal plan of studying Physics, his time as an Engineer instilled in him a keen interest in technology... one of the many self-discoveries he made thanks to the war. He specialized in Starship Engineering with emphasis in propulsion systems, taking on xeno-technology as a sub-specialty. His experiences allowed him to excell academically, the practical knowledge gained being of substantial help in offering a unique understanding of the subject matter. He continued on to achieve an advanced degree in Starship Architecture. He still felt empty however, and in an attempt to fill the proverbial void decided to apply for an exchange program between the Confederate Armada and the Federation's Starfleet. Starfleet was still rebuilding from the war, and thus the exchange level was raised. Aiden was accepted, and attended the Exchange Officer's Candidate School. Here he learned the basics of military style discipline and Starfleet procedures. In short, it was an unpleasant, typically mundane experience... essentially the last winter storm before a beautiful spring. He received a commission in Starfleet in 2381, and given his previous experience and education rose quickly to the Assistant Chief Engineering spot on the Excelsior class vessel. Here he met a Vulcan woman named T'Lel. She was unlike most of her species, carrying herself in a much less presumptuous and almost 'freer' way than other Vulcans. Over the two years they developed a strong bond, based mostly around debates and mutual respect for each other's talents and strengths. When news of a transfer came, both were hit hard, though stoically they did their best to hide this fact from each other. He was transferred to the U.S.S. Relentless in 2383 to fill a temporary vacancy as acting Chief Engineer, this posting was later made permanent after the USS Relentless returned to the Alpha Quadrant after a warp speed test went haywire, the Relentless was pulled into a 'Subspace Slipstream', He was instrumental in repairing the ship so she could return. She was awarded a commendation for his thinking. It was around this time he met his wife. Captain Alex Harrison, she held the Marine commission but she was dangerously unstable and he seemed to help her pull it together. It was this effect that caused her to become more stable in life but his outlook became darker as a result, a couple of years went by as he became more and more dark in his thought processes. He was promoted and transferred to the USS Infinity and was assigned as her Executive officer, he served well here along with his new bride whom he finally married. He was then assigned to shake down the USS Holland while waiting for his permanent new command, one USS Queen Mary which was a totally new version of the older Pathfinder II Class. This ship was just as powerful as the Pillar of Autumn variant in terms of engines and defensive systems but she was a frightening foe to behold on any battlefield, he was quietly told that this ship was a reward for his years of loyal service. flattered and honored but such words, he swore he would destroy the Federations enemies or die trying. His loyal Executive Officer who was deranged was promoted to his own command, the USS Holland and thus he ended up promoting Lt Commander David Stevenson to Commander and Exec. in mid 2393, things between him and his wife exploded out of control after she tortured someone within an inch of their lives by mistake, she was reassigned and he divorced her in the process. |
