| Personal History | Karl Diego Reyes was born in 2349, in in San Saba, Texas, Earth. He was the son of John Reyes, who was a Starfleet Marine. Reyes was raised in the Catholic church; he would later say he was "raised a good Catholic boy". Later in life he became an agnostic but always maintained respect for the church. Reyes joined Starfleet in 2359, he spent the usual time at the academy and while his instruction was valuable, all it really did was add onto what he was already taught by his friends and family. Reyes was an honest man. This honesty, and his refusal to "play along" with policies and actions he knew were illegal, got him into difficulties with corrupt officials on more than one occasion. During one incident, a landing pad had been rigged to explode; when it did, a close friend of Reyes's was killed. His friend's daughter blamed him for many years, and Reyes retreated into alcoholism to help him cope with the event. During the Cardassian Boarder wars. Reyes served on several ships and helped to liberate several planets over the course of the war. He participated in a number of ground battles against the Cardassians and managed to survive the war, a considerable accomplishment. However, his experiences led to a certain amount of distrust and dislike of pompous high-ranking officers, a fact which often got him into trouble with his superiors. However, his naturally suspicious and rebellious nature made him an excellent investigator and security officer. His alcoholism may also have been a coping mechanism stemming from some form of PTSD that he acquired during the war. Because of his bouts with alcohol & PTSD, he's often seen as a sympathetic character to fellow veterans of various wars, giving them wide latitude when they commit minor infractions on his watch as Chief of Security and later commanding officer of the Trafalgar. Reyes continued to have problems with alcoholism for a number of years, which got him fired from several assignments. Eventually he was able to bring his alcoholism under control. While piloting Captain Jeffrey Sinclair over the surface of Alpha Centauri VIIb, their shuttle malfunctioned and crashed. Reyes and Sinclair then had to trek across the gas giant moons surface for several days in order to make it back to civilization, during the trek the two men became friends. While on Alpha Centauri, he also began a romantic relationship with Catrin Jones, a civilian medical officer working in New Leningrad's Main Hospital. She eventually broke up with him due to his repeated bouts of alcoholism and difficulties in starfleet. When Sinclair was picked to command the USS Century, he asked Reyes to serve as chief of security. Jones refused to go with Reyes, citing her work as Captain Sinclair offered her the chance to do so much more then work at a hospital, he offered to sponsor her to go to Starfleet Academy if she really wanted it. Jones was shocked and she accepted, she was on the next intake of enlisted people as she refused to spend four years at the academy, now she got to see how Karl Reyes did things. Garibaldi became an excellent chief of security over the next few years. He managed to keep his alcoholism under control as he would often be seen refusing free liquor and drinking water instead, and became well-liked and respected by the security forces that he commanded. As Security Chief he made it his duty to know every nook and corner of the station where criminals could possibly hide and operate, and he also worked hard to know and keep track of every leader and member of human and alien organized-crime groups in the sector where the Century was assigned. His presence alone was often enough to intimidate would-be criminals and evildoers from carrying out their plans, or to confessing to their crimes. In 2373. Reyes became embroiled in his second war, this one was against the Klingons and he learned that he liked warfare, especially from the bridge of a fully working Federation starship. he went from the Haven Jace over to the Constant and then to the Dragon, all in the space of three years before landing a spot as Executive Officer of the Columbia where he would fight his third war, this time it was against his old foes, the Cardassians, but they had help this time, their allies from the Gamma Quadrant. During the war he came face to face with a serial murderer, a man named Al Bester who was a Betazoid who lost his mind due to Betazed falling to the Dominion and Starfleet's refusal to liberate his homeworld on his terms, this guy murdered fifteen women while Reyes and the Columbia were on Earth Spacedock, yet this guy had the ability to get in and out of any situation, almost like he could phase out of normal time or something, the man was clearly excellent at his work. Bester would lead Reyes on a wild goose chase that lasted almost ten years and would leave several people dead that Reyes was very close to including his friend, Rear Admiral Jeffery Sinclair who was murdered in his sleep in Starbase 81. In the end however. Captain Reyes along with his apprentice Lt Commander John Sheridan were able to track down Bester. While Reyes couldn't bring himself to kill him, he does help bring him to justice, once and for all. Bester spends the rest of his life in prison, with his abilities suppressed by drugs while Reyes, now commanding the USS Trafalgar was able to let his past go and return to his wife and children who reside with him aboard the Trafalgar. Late in 2391. Karl Reyes was reassigned from the command of the USS Trafalgar and he was reassigned over to the USS Deutschland, a newly constructed Excalibur class starship. |
